Florida man injured by exploding electronic cigarette (it was in his mouth at the time)

A Florida man got the shock of his life on Wednesday when an electronic cigarette he was using exploded in his mouth.

Honestly, you try to do the right thing and it all blows up in your face. A Florida man who finally came around to the idea of giving up smoking decided to use an electronic cigarette to help him try to kick the habit.

So far so good, you might think. The problem for 57-year-old Tom Holloway, however, was that while it was in his mouth the thing exploded.

The explosion was so severe that it destroyed some of his front teeth, as well as part of his tongue, and left his face severely burned. On top of that, carpet, cushions and pictures in his home were set on fire.

Holloway, from Niceville, Florida, is reported to be recovering in an Alabama hospital. It’s believed a faulty battery caused the incident. The specific brand of electronic cigarette and battery hasn’t yet been identified although it’s thought that the battery was a rechargeable lithium type.

The convenience store ones are awful tasting and pretty strong...and expensive. Of course the cost of any of them is up to the smokers' individual habits.

E-cigs open up a new way to smoke, for example: when you use a regular cigarette, you have to go outside, and then you will stand there and smoke most of the cigarettte, even though your nicotine craving is usually satisfied with just a few puffs. If you used it like a conventional smoke and puff-puff-puff for 10 minutes at a sitting, you'll use'm up quick.

With this concept they do last longer and are a LOT more convenient and cheaper. Some brands even make a lanyard you can put around your neck and hang the e-cig from it.

You have to re-think smoking just a bit to make maximum use of the e-Cigs, but once you get used to it, it's great. I even thought about putting the clip off a ball-point pen on mine to carry it in my shirt pocket.

No more smelly clothes, yellow teeth, stinky car, or butts and ashes. We have been buying them on-line, but are switching to try "Pro Smoke", as they are not made with propylene glycol, but with a propellent that is vegetable based. The Pro Smoke reviews are very good, and we're going to try those.

The first brand we tried were ok, but customer service was terrible and the shipments were almost always 5 to 10 days late.

I agree, but everyone is not you. I congratulate you on your courage, gravitas, and will power, but individuals vary.

Some people try everything from patches, to pills, to gum and even hypnosis...with no luck.

I actually quit over 10 years ago, just like you did...just decided to quit and I did.

I know you probably look down on those who can't do that, but I am very thankful that there is something out there to help them, like e-cigs.

Bottom line: the post I made is not aimed at people like you, who can and did quit...it's for those people who have a hard time with it. If you look down on them, then you have more of a problem than the smokers have...

My mom was using one of these for a few months. She was having problems with the battery keeping a charge. Went back to cigs after she got replacements that did the same thing.

I have to agree. After many years the Blu’s have worked for me, though I only use the disposals (Walgreen’s carries them). Not cheap, but definitely better than continuing to smoke. Going on 6 months now with the no tar, no chemicals cigarettes.

This is a heckuva coincidence....just Wednesday, wifey and I put in our first order with Vapor4Life, being as they're refillable.

I NEVER look down on someone who is trying to better themselves, but people need to understand that they are more powerful than any bad habit. I do not agree that tobacco is addictive, a bad habit yes, addictive...no. Other than really desiring a cigarette, and not knowing what to do with your hands, smoking is just a bad habit. I know people who give up smoking for Lent and then resume smoking come Easter....smoking is enjoyable and satisfying, but not addictive.

NO-NO-NO...make no mistake about it, I still want to smoke and it has been 30 or more years since I kicked the habit. Smoking is comforting, fulfilling, tastes good, satisfies your suckling urge, whatever...I didn't say it was easy, just more than possible and worth it. Over the 30 or so years involved here, I have intentionally smoked probably 10-15 cigarettes, just to prove to myself that I could smoke one and not revert to my previous bad habit.
