A friend of mine called me. She is in all black at work today because “My dog didn’t win.” She liked the black Cocker, who is a cutie.
Hi Boots! I just have one closing statement about the dog show. I WAS SMILIING FROM EAR TO EAR the whole time. All those dogs are adorable. Of course, I wouldn’t have selected the floor mop! Floor mop is retiring and a long time winner. Could have been political?
I loved so many of those pooches. I’d be a horrible judge.
I had no clue.
Next time I watch a dog show I will have a different angle.

But like I said to Mrs Moonhawk, the winner looks like something the cat coughed up.
Even though it did sort of grow on me....
I loved them all, as well.
But the thing that gave me the biggest smile, was when during the final competion they all responded to the applause and really started strutting their stuff.
Although he wasn’t my fave, I loved it when the Kerry Blue Terrier jumped right up on the winner’s platform when he was named best terrier.

He’s one of the dogs the sport reveres to this day. Considering when he lived, he may have been small in stature, but he is considered one of the finest show dogs to have ever graced a ring.

He looks nothing like the first Pekingese champion.
See above. No comparison to Tuesday's champion. I swear that there is some fraud going on. A poster way up on this thread defended the judge's choice by saying something like 116 other judges had chosen the floor mop to be a fine example of the breed. I thought the BIS judge was supposed to be "independent" and "sequestered" from show gossip. So, how could she know that 116 other judges had chosen this dog. This poor dog couldn't even walk into the ring. Writers were saying that he was "tired". He won his Best in Group on Monday night. He should have been well rested by BIS.
Instead of a floor mop, maybe he should be compared to a shoe shine machine.

The BIS judge stays away from the show until he or she steps into the ring to officiate at Westminster. There are show-related magazines in which owners advertise their wins. These publications are sent to every individual who judges even one breed at AKC shows. So, unless she’s one of the judges who tosses this deluge of advertising in the trash, she knows Malachy. Everyone in dogs knows Malachy.
Malachy wins, but he also loses. I’ve seen him do so, although not at the breed level (I’m sure it’s happened). I’ve seen him lose to the fabulous black cocker who was dumped in the breed at this year’s Garden and also to that German Shepherd, the herding winner this year.
Dog show judging is very subjective. It relies on the judges’ opinions of the entries on that day, at that show. Dogs can and do win under a judge, then lose the next time they compete under that individual.

She’s spectacular, isn’t she? Even though I was rooting for the English Springer, I was blown away by that Irish. What a showgirl! I will be interested to see how her pups turn out in the coming years.
I thought that GSD had a very odd gait -- odd even for a GSD. But he was powerful looking. My best friend has a beautiful GSD bitch who was thought to be show quality at one time. My friend did not want to show her and had her spayed. She's barely 10 now and so broken down in the hindquarters that she can barely walk. It is so sad, because I love that dog. She used to play endlessly with my Golden who is about the same age, but they cannot see each other anymore for fear of doing more damage to the GSD's back. Now, when I come home from my friend's house, I get sniffed all over by my dog who is looking for his old friend. I feel like I've been cheating on him with another dog! I get the same treatment from the GSD when I go over there.

People call them “hockwalkers”. My female GSD walks and trots on her pads, but then she comes from 11 generations of German German shepherds who have sheep tending titles. I bought her from a Canadian breeder. I prefer GSD’s who wouldn’t get a look in the US rings, but who live to be 12 and over and can still get around.
The English Springer was terrific. Of course, I was partial to the Golden which is always a losing proposition. When you think about how many other Goldens the one in the center ring has beaten to get there you have to wonder why they never get chosen?
Since the dogs are not supposed to be judged against other breeds (impossible task, I think) you’d expect that the dog in the center ring is a pretty good example of his own breed. Surely a dog who had beaten 1000 other examples of his breed is more likely to be a great example of his breed than a dog who has beaten only 10, for instance.
You have to wonder why some of these breeds that never win (like the Goldens) continue to compete. Is it just social?
I’d rather have a dog that lasted longer than one who wins ribbons and silver. I’ve got too much silver already. (polishing chore) I think that it is a crime to breed a dog that is not sound. I thought the AKC was formed to avoid that sin.
My last Golden lived to 15 1/2 and that was too soon to leave us. This one is about 11 (he was a rescue, so not exactly sure of his age) with no medical problems except for some skin allergies which we control at the bad times of the year.
He threw up part of his breakfast this AM so I’m watching him carefully today. I grabbed a towel to clean up after him, but he gulped it down again before I could get there. I hope he just ate too quickly and it’s not a bad sign.
He moves slower than when I first got him 10 years ago, but he still runs like a puppy when I call him in. He’s a dark red Golden, so he reminds me of that Irish Setter when he’s running at full tilt. A little chunkier than an Irish, of course.
OMG! Fox News in on right now and the next story is about someone who took their small dog to a pet groomer (a large chain) and the groomer cut off part of the dog’s ear and tried to glue it back on! Lawsuit!
