The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is again cautioning consumers that chicken jerky products for dogs (also sold as chicken tenders, strips or treats) may be associated with illness in dogs. In the last 12 months, FDA has seen an increase in the number of complaints it received of dog illnesses associated with consumption of chicken jerky products imported from China.
Now, four months later, pets are still dying from these treats. And, since the FDA testing has been inconclusive, the pet food companies that sell them arent recalling them. Again, thats even though many pets are dying. Some of the pet food companies involved include well known pet food brands Purina and Dogswell.
Because tests by the FDA are inconclusive, pet treat manufacturers are not required by law to recall their products, and none of them have volunteered to do so. But given that the tests have not pinpointed the contaminant does not mean it is not contaminated. The FDA issued a warning to pet owners in November, 2011 in regards to this issue.
The question many are asking is how many dogs will have to die before the products are recalled? It is already estimated that the dead and dying are numbered at more than 500. This number does not count all of the cases that have not made the connection yet between a pets illness and the treats. The treats are causing kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, with some cases resulting in death; others, in chronic kidney disease...
...At a news conference today in Cleveland, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich both petitioned the FDA to step up their investigation. They both called for the Food and Drug Administration to take immediate action ...

Our people in charge have pretty much made it impossible to buy from anyone but China.
China can also route their poisons through other countries without having to put their name on it. We don’t have a chance in hell. Some small things, like dog toys we might be able to make ourselves...until they make that illegal.
Just like in the near future we will be MADE to have checking accounts at banks with fees paid to the government just for having one. Your SS check will have to go straight to the bank, another fee.
Just like the healthscam. We pay out the AZZ and get less freedom, less privacy, less ownership.
I am sorry to hear about your Callie. My wife and I just lost our Rat Terrier, Muffy in a similar fashion. One night last month we went to bed and she was fine. When we woke she was paralyzed. It was so sad. She was 13 but seemed to be in good perfect health.
Like you, this has me wondering the same...
This is Bullsh!t.
I broker several million lbs of dog treats from all over the world per year and am aware of no evidence whatsoever pointing to imported chicken treats causing animal fatalities.
FDA has been looking into this for some time and have found nothing difinitive.
Why should the companies recall the product when even the ultra reactive FDA can state nothing with confidence.
If you’re worried, don’t buy the treats.
Even before this happened we always checked the label. Nothing ever from China or Mexico.
If it were not for the chinese products we could place all US made products in a single 2,000 sq ft retail store.
I’ve noticed many products are now saying, “Distributed by so & so company”, without saying where the products are made.
Better not buy Shrimp, Talapia, etc at your grocery store as the vast majority comes from China and surrounding countries.

True. Most Chicken based treats, Beef Rawhides and Jerky products are coming from China.
The only company that I know that’s producing finished product using exclusively domestic suppliers foor raw material is Jurassic Pet out of Rockford Illinois.

Thank You, dear Dogggie loving Fellow FReeper! :-)
Some dogs love the crunchy sound of a water bottle in a sock or if you can sew you can make a little more elaborate stuffed critter. There are some DIY instructions out there (google something like “Crunchy Water Bottle Dog Toy”). You can buy the toys premade, but I notice they are imported. You can check those out first and just make your own. I know my puppies always loved to play with water bottles. Of course, I’m not sure where the bottles are made and the safety of them is a whole other thing.
Oh, you beat me. I should have known.
That might work! I just made a sock toy with a tennis ball, but Linda is not amused because it doesn’t squeak. But a water bottle on the other hand makes some real good noise! I’ll try it!
Horrible. I would be so angry. In fact, it wasn’t my dog and I’m angry.
bump!
Welcome, I was pretty late to the party tho. BTW here is a fun and easy recipe that is basically the same as that expensive frozen treat you can buy your dog. Mine loves it.
