TORONTO The NHL is investigating a scoreboard error that could have an "enormous impact" on playoff races in the Western Conference.
During Wednesday night's game at Staples Center in Los Angeles, the clock briefly stopped in the closing seconds giving Drew Doughty enough time to score the winning goal in a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The puck officially crossed the line with less than a second to play in regulation. However, when the Blue Jackets looked at video after the game, they discovered the clock froze for roughly a second just prior to Doughty's goal meaning time should have expired.
The NHL's video room looked at the play immediately after the goal was scored, but didn't notice that the scoreboard stopped while the Kings were buzzing around the net.
"We didn't even look to go back and say 'OK, did something happen (with the clock)?"' Colin Campbell, the NHL's senior executive vice president of hockey operations, said Thursday.
"When it crosses the line (and) you review it, you back the puck out and you see what the clock was. And the clock was 0.4 (seconds).
"And then after the game, minutes after the game, we see (it and say) 'Holy cow."'

Is this confined to Staples Center or could this be something more sinister?
Sounds like the NHL works like the rinoe republicans.
Hard to say, but IMHO the NHL will find out if this is an isolated incident, or if it occurs more often than this one time.
They have all the tapes, and they’re good at reviewing.
I think the NHL has the best instant replay system in all of professional sports. It’s all done at NHL Headquarters in Toronto - every replay call is made from there.
No outside influences - they sit in “The Bunker” and make calls on every game played. And that’s all they do.
Not a bad gig, now that I think of it! ;^)
Yeah, but they still make some boneheaded decisions and the league protects certain franchises.
They are human and do make mistakes. The war room called a goal against us this season and said the call on the ice stands. No one on the ice had called the goal and they just gave it to the opposing team when it clearly was NOT a goal. And the intent to whistle call drives me nuts.
His providing of video to accompany every decision regarding fines and suspensions is excellent, and long overdue.
There's no denying that.
Even when I disagree with him, I think it’s fair the way he presents each case.
And Shanahan has credibility too.
BTW, speaking of the Toronto booth reviews: I was sitting right behind the goal a couple years ago when the Hurricanes scored at :01 of regulation to beat Brodeur and the Devils in a play off game. Took about 10 very nervous minutes of review to determine. Was the only time a play off game had been decided at the buzzer in regulation like that. There was not even time for a face off. It was a regulation sudden death type ending.

Game of the weekend is once again Rangers vs Flyers. Altough Montreal vs Washington should be good.
I’ve seen clocks do that all the time late in games... they all go a little funny when counting down by tenths of a second.
Well, 2012 is a Leap Year. Gotta make up for the extra day.
Whoa.
I used to do this in college: when we had to turn in 5 page papers and mine went over, I’d put in 2 page 4s. I never got caught. no one looks back. Glad someone did here!
I hope whoever did this gets caught. Cheaters are weasels.
BTW, how about Sam Gagner last night? Eight points, tying The Great One's team record. What's more, he participated in all of the Oilers' 8 goals, I don't think that's ever happened.
As I sit here in my Blue Jackets sweatshirt, all I can say is... I hope this doesn’t impact our “Fail for Nail” strategery.
Game of the weekend is Boston vs. Pittsburgh (1pm Sat). Pens are playing much better now than they were the last time they saw each other in December. IMO they are the two best teams in the east.

Not for the Jackets, obviously.
