All you need is a baton of wood, An empty soda can, some cement and a few nails (maybe a little electrical tape for a grip) and you can make a great mace.

They don't have pics of our heroine, so I will post a rendering of a 17-YO Mayfest participant, since it should be close:

Just waiting for somebody to post the picture of Mr. Sulu from Star Trek with a sword. It seems to happen whenever swords are mentioned here. How about Diego Montoya instead?

Ha!
My son bought one of those crappy swords at Mayfest (Renaissance Festival, actually).
The handle broke off!

Yep. I've got some expensive chef's knives that are Japanese. During a daily DFAC inspection up in Alaska, a visiting Navy doc did the inspection, and I had my knife case open getting ready for the day.
As he picked up the paring knife, I opened my mouth to warn him, but too late.
He wound up inspecting our first aid kit. ;)
Japs make some good knives. No question. And as someone that has worked a knife for 10 hours a day, light and easy to handle.
German chef knives are great for 30 minutes, then they wear you out.

Wonder Woman possesses a sword forged by Hephaestus that is sharp enough to cut the electrons off an atom. Impressive!

True. Cheap and easy to build. You have to worry about the head slipping off though.
You would look pretty silly if you wound up standing there with a just stick in your hand.

I love swords, but only "real" swords. [...] Windlass makes some fairly good swords, and they're reasonably priced. Quality can be spotty, though. A little hit and miss.
The best though, are made by Albion up in New Glarus, WI. They're expensive, but worth it.

Based on the photo, I daresay that if that sword had been just a bit sharper, and depending on the angle, the perp may very well have been the LATE Mr. Olson. Our hero might have lopped the top of his head off.
On a side note: In some evangelical Christian circles, the fathers of young men have recently taken to presenting swords to their teenaged sons as a symbol of their faith and as a reminder they are to be ‘warriors’ in the service of God. This is done as a ceremony to show they are taking their first steps as a MAN of God. Personally, I think it’s a nifty idea.

Back when I had more cash, I splurged on one of these: http://www.sword-buyers-guide.com/Official-SBG-Katana.html
Let's just say it lives up to its billing. The perp would have lost a limb or his head.

I bought my son a Cold Steel Army Saber when he was commissioned. They make quality swords. I've got a few Cold Steel items. The Navy Cutlass, the Viking Sword, and the Hand-and-a-half. Their Hand+half had some quality problems with the early ones, with hilts coming loose, but mine is a later model and I've had no trouble with it. They're all ~wicked~ sharp. :-)
The hand+half handles OK, has a good grip, cuts easily. It's a little blade heavy but not as bad as some. The Viking Sword is a little too narrow in the grip, but it cuts well.
One thing of theirs I can't say enough good about is their Trailmaster knife. Big, thick blade. Very strong. Very hefty.

Sounds like a crappy sword. Looks from the video like a junky katana. The handle came off. Not a good sign. But heh, like you said... all that ends well...
