Manning, Irsay Quarrel Could Doom Peyton In Indy

INDIANAPOLIS -- It appears that the future of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is tenuous at best after a public spat between him and team owner Jim Irsay.

While Manning's neck injury is keeping him sidelined indefinitely, a war of words that has erupted in recent days could signal that he won't be back with the Colts, regardless of his health situation.

Two days after Manning complained about a dour atmosphere around the Colts' complex, Irsay called his four-time league MVP a "politician" and said he didn't appreciate Manning's public campaign.

The comments upstaged the introduction of Irsay's new coach, Chuck Pagano, and came six weeks before Irsay must decide whether to pay the still-recovering Manning a $28 million bonus.

"It's all but a foregone conclusion that Indianapolis will draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick of the upcoming NFL draft. For a team that has made a flurry of off-season changes, some think it would be best to cut ties with Manning and begin a completely new era."

It would be the stupidest move of the franchise if they let a healthy Peyton go.

Stupider things have happened in the NFL. Wait until halftime of the SB.

Spat or no, voluntarily or not, Manning is gone.

It’s time for the Manning to go. The Colts have to rebuild from the ground up, they won’t be competitive for at least 3 seasons, so they should let the aging QB go and spend the cash they save on other players.

Peyton Manning made the Indianapolis version of the Colts, and he also made a whole host of average players, coaches and, maybe most of all, owners, look far better than they ever were. This past season proves that beyond any reasonable doubt.

Except he's not healthy & I wouldn't gamble $28 mil (at least) on him ever being.

I think Peyton's career is over, unfortunately. Football players don't have 3 neck surgeries in less than 2 years & keep playing.

I think Manning should retire from the game. How many players have stayed one season too long and end up with a bad injury. A neck injury is nothing to f*ck around with...

There is no upside to keeping Manning. They’re going to draw huge crowds over the next couple of years to see if Luck is the real deal. The money they save in not keeping Manning will enable them to add a number of very good players to support Luck, which will give the kid a chance to succeed. Even if Manning is healthy, which is far from certain, he’d have only about two good years left. Short-term competitiveness is not worth sacrificing long-term success. Let Manning go and build a statue in his honour when he retires from the NFL.

Ironically, the first two procedures were done in hopes the fusion surgery could be avoided. In the interim, the nerves became even more injured. I've read he is experiencing numbness in his fingers and weakness in his triceps, both on his right (throwing) arm. Doesn't sound like a $28M QB.

It is a shame, but that is football. Every player is one play away from retirement.

Manning is CRAZY if he ever plays again. He should just take the insurance millions and call it a day.

The risk to his life isn’t worth it.

Indy has to rebuild under Luck. It makes no sense to spend $50 million for one position. That salary cap money is needed to start restocking the cupboard. It's just business.

Assuming Peyton makes a full recovery, he can have a couple of good seasons with a team poised to be a contender, like Arizona or S.F.

“Spat or no, voluntarily or not, Manning is gone.”

Yep, they are simply not going to hand over 28 million to a 35 year old quarterback with an indefinite neck injury.

Love to see Peyton in the burgundy and gold for a couple of seasons.

It would be stupid to let Manning go, when he can teach Andrew Luck so much of what he knows. Luck is the future, but if I am the Colts, I do anything to make a smooth transition from Maning to Luck, even if or especially if, Manning’s neck injury does not allow him to play another down.

Luck’s rookie contract can’t be that big that they can’t keep Manning around. May hurt the team in the short term but could make them champions in the long term. To that end, I hope they toss off Manning and leave Luck to sink or swim, which is one less powerhouse team my 49ers have to worry about.

The last labor contract ended huge rookie salaries. Sam Bradford got the last monster rookie QB contract, and Cam Newton got millions less.

Luck won’t cost that much for a few years.

Peyton Manning will be an Arizona Cardinal. They are loaded with offensive weapons, have a dynamic kick returner, and had a solid defense last year.

They play indoors and have an offensive minded coach. The Cardinals have been known to bring in veteran players like Kurt Warner.

If not Arizona, Manning will be pursued by the 49ers, the Jets, the Dolphins, the Seahawks, and the Vikings.

Plus, new GM, new coaches, new training staff, new players, whole new system...not gonna be much for Peyton to teach. Better for Luck to start from square one along with the rest of the organization. If PM decides he still wants to play, I’m sure Arizona would be interested. (...or even the Jets)

Joint statement just issued:

JOINT STATEMENT FROM PEYTON MANNING AND JIM IRSAY

We would like to dispel any misperception that there might be any hard feelings between us.

Since 1998, we have enjoyed a great relationship, based upon mutual respect and trust. We have always been able to talk and address matters we’ve faced over the years, not just as owner and player, but as friends.

We had a long talk today and we want to assure Colts fans everywhere that we are both committed to maintaining our close relationship and to working together through any challenges the future may bring.
