Golden Retriever Puppy Found Shot and Killed on Maryland Farm

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Heidi, the Golden Retriever puppy, loved to play - especially in water.

"If there was a puddle in the driveway, she'd go roll in," says her owner Lynette Kaufmann.

But when you called her name, Heidi came right away. That's why Kaufmann knew something was wrong Wednesday on her farm in Middletown, Maryland.

For years, Lynette and her husband have been foster parents for rescue dogs, including Molly, who has a spinal injury.

"I can't stand to think of a dog not having a home," she says.

After a short run on the farm the other four dogs returned to the house around 10:30 Wednesday morning, but Heidi did not. Lynette and two friends searched the farm for three hours and had nearly given up when they found 7-month-old Heidi dead in a field.

The puppy had been shot three times.

Poorly veiled death threats are a form of mild amusement to me.

Its not a threat little missy.

It is an open promise to all of the loud mouthed key-board tough guy dog shooters out there. If you are part of this crowd consider yourself on notice.

If not go back to your knitting and sandwich making.

Heck, 20 pounds? Gunner would make short work of that. What about that monster on the picnic table? I bet he couldn’t eat that one in one sitting.

Thank you for respecting our rural / backwoods local culture.

If it’ll fry, it’ll fly.

Lynette The owners admits so many words “lets the dogs run looose”.

The type of fencing that would kept an animal like a dog would be prohibitively expensive as any suburbanite with an enclosed backyard dogpen can atypest.

Even something as simple as “pig wire” fencing would be hard on the wallet for “hobby farmers” to enclose fifty acres. Unless the the dogs owners are retired millionaires with lots of spare change to spend, the fields were "easy access" for dogs to enter and leave.

The dog as big as an Golden retriever could easily be shot off their property and bled out once it retuns to it's home turf, depending on the wounds severity.

Of course there could be a dog hating sadist lurking around their farm. If more pets, especially animals that are leashed turn up dead nearby we may have our answer.

Communicating interstate threats is a Federal crime and it carries a potential penalty of five years in prison for each incidence.

You should probably be aware of this.

As for what you’re upset about all I can imagine is that you’ve never lived in the country and you don’t know much about cattle ranching. Speaking for myself, I’ve never broken any state laws on this topic and it may turn out that what happened in Maryland was also in line with state law. The dog was found on the owner’s property but that does not mean the dog was shot on that property.

If a crime was committed I’m sure the local police will get to the bottom of it.

In the meantime, you may wish to check your own state laws with regards to what other people are permitted to do when a strange dog shows up on their property. If you don’t like those laws then write to your legislators and ask to change those laws.

Have a nice day, FRiend.

I didn't see any threats. Or were you implying a threat to shoot Eaker's dogs?

That would be.. inadvisable.

That sounds like pure Heaven for gunner.

But don’t mess with me!

Today the repair place sent a guy to pick up our lawn
tractor, and he couldn’t push it up the ramps onto the
trailer, so I had to heave it with him.

He was a bit shocked when I actually moved the thing.

I’m a strong old bat.

Please note that Eaker did say “shoot his dog on his property”. Where I live, if I shot someone that was trying to harm my dog (whether at home, in my car, or on a leash) I would be justified under the law.

And they would be justified in shooting it if it was terrorizing their animals or children. Back growing up in Northern Minnesota it was encouraged to shoot “wild” packs of dogs although I never came across any. But I heard that often these “wild” dogs included pets that would be out and run with the pack.

I don’t care about what happens on other peoples property as you are making that up out of whole cloth per the article.

Seems wee Megan wants to shoot my dogs on my property. A FR n00bie mistake. What, do you think you are a cop and have a right to indiscriminately shoot folk’s dogs?

Megan, I’ll FReepmail you my address if you would like to try it and I’ll be happy to give you classes on being country if you wish too.
