A New Mexico man who said he was forced to pull his own tooth while in solitary confinement because he was denied access to a dentist has been awarded $22 million due to inhumane treatment by New Mexico's Dona Ana County Jail.
Stephen Slevin was arrested in August of 2005 for driving while intoxicated, then thrown in jail for two years. He was in solitary at Dona Ana County Jail for his entire sentence and basically forgotten about and never given a trial, he told NBC station KOB.com Tuesday night.
"'[Jail guards were] walking by me every day, watching me deteriorate," Slevin said. "Day after day after day, they did nothing, nothing at all, to get me any help."

I hate to burst your bubble, but the major pushers and king pins are RARELY the ones that are in prison.
People to contact...and description about the jail...
Christopher Barela Detention Center Administrator 1850 Copper Loop Las Cruces, New Mexico 88005 Voice: (575) 647-7600 Fax: (575) 647-7625 TDD: (575) 525-5951
The Doña Ana County Detention Center has a staff of 197 full-time positions, which include administrative, security, support and medical staff. In addition to county employees, there are 41 contract personnel and, at any given time, up to 67 volunteers.
Deputy Administrator - Operations and Support: Major Cheryl Roach
Adult Detention Facility: The adult detention facility differs from a traditional linear jail in that there are no bars separating officers and inmates. Instead, they are separated by glass partitions, which allow officers to maintain continuous observation of all inmates and to ensure that inmates are constantly aware that they are under observation.
Housing: Built in 1995, the facility was originally designed with 562 beds. In 2000, an additional housing unit was added and some remodeling was done to increase the number of beds to 846 and the total living space to 166,543 square feet. Inmates are housed in seven secure housing units. Most inmates share a cell with at least one other inmate.
Population: The average daily inmate population in calendar year 2004 was 809. Most of the inmates are pre-trial detainees.
Apples and oranges. First of all, communist China executes people far more rapidly, and for lesser transgressions than we do.
Do you have any other details?
I am confused. How is it a sentence when he did not have a trial?
“First of all I don’t believe 75% of the article. Consider the source.”
Google Steven Slevin Dona Ana County Jail to find 1600+ articles about it.
He likely did not exist on arrest records. Family would not know his whereabouts. With him not on record? No attorney and no court. How did he get out? Who knows maybe he convinced an inmate getting out to notify family. Maybe a guard or other worker finally got a conscience. This used to be more common than you might expect in more remote parts of the country.
Actually, you miss the point. Per CAPITA we blow ANY other nation, by far, out of the water. But in absolute terms, we have more prisoners than even China, who is second in total prisoners, even with 5x our population.
You must be unaware of the police state, so I forgive you. Maybe it’s time to turn off the TV.
There are over 10,000 pages to the U.S. Criminal code, more crimes than lawmakers even can count (It’s impossible for a human being to know the myriad ways you are breaking each day. At the Federal level, the average is 3 FELONIES per day, per person). Furthermore between 1/3 and 1/2 (40% IIRC, it was on a thread 2 weeks ago) of all youths are arrested or detained before adulthood. You simply don’t care because you’re under the (false!) assumption that the police state won’t be used against you some day. It will (and everyone else, too), so, get ready for it. Or go back to the football game. Bread and circuses for all!
You have quite an imagination.
LOL. Apparently you've forgotten about our Tyrannical War on Drugs.
Untold thousands of non-criminal Americans are now in prison, filling them to overflowing, often with draconian minimum mandatory sentences.
This has produced the ridiculous side effect of creating a situation where real criminals, who commit acts of horrible violence and massive fraud, and who should be kept out of society, are released prematurely, only to offend again.
Thus crime rates become excessively elevated, due to the fact that a vast majority of violent and fraudulent crime is committed by a relatively small group of people who offend repeatedly, being incarcerated and then released, over and over again. This is the "revolving door" situation which modern "crime-fighting" has created.
America's contraband laws crowd our prisons with countless honest, nonviolent people who have never even committed an actual crime against anyone. They are simply guilty of possessing or distributing something which has been declared illegal by the state.
A better arrangement would be to put real criminals in prison and keep them there, instead of releasing them early to make room for victims of Tyrannical law.
This is the same government that we let teach little kids about sex.
I surely wish I could say this is surprising as well as troubling and unconscionable. It surely is the latter two, but not surprising considering the sorry state of law enforcement in this country, mostly by prohibiting private, voluntary behaviors. In the pursuit of these “criminals by edict,” way too many shortcuts are taken, then condoned by the courts, lawmakers pass more and more “laws” which are totally devoid of constitutional content, at the behest of police and prosecutors who “need” more power, and way too many otherwise law abiding Americans cheer them on because one of THEIR pet incursions on liberty is being fed.
It has become apparent that both freedom and respect for law have reached their nadir and assumption of unconstitutional power has reached its zenith over the past 3-5 years or so. Truly a bipartisan power grab. To the detriment of EVERYTHING Americans once held dear.
And your so called fact os bnased on...????
I have forgotten nothing.... The facts are the facts. I do not really care what you think is true. The numbers are the numbers
And for the record you no longer get charged with a felony for having a single seed from a marijuana plant. Do not tell me about the terrible things that happen to current drug users....there are drug courts and rehab circuits and all sorts of stuff that the courts use to keep folks out of prison.
And please note I referred to PRISON not the local jails.....
bttt
Yep.
I didn’t state anything or source anything. I only told you what IIRC means.
