Listening to Midnight Trucking Radio just now, and they have a guy on talking about an engine lubricant product called Motorkote. He talked it up so well, that I got curious and went to their website to have a look.
I read through the testimonials for the product on their site, and I've gotta say, this stuff sounds terrific. Truckers and normal auto owners say all sorts of great things about the stuff.
Anyone using this stuff, or have you ever heard of it?
Well, if the stuff works, it works. That's really all I care about. I know that a lot of bs products have come down the pike over my lifetime, but every now and again, something pops up that's as good as promised.
Be nice is this was one of them. Sounds like great stuff.
That reminds me. My truck is way overdue for an oil change. I may just do that tomorrow.
Well, it won’t ‘hurt’ anything.
Here’s the proble,...aside from the fact that you drive a Chevy...which is unpardonable to a fine upstanding Ford man sush as my bad self...
At almost 200k that engine, even if maintained with love, joy and sacrificial offerings, has wear. Tolerances are now far greater than the factory intended. As such, oil has to work harder and breaks down quicker. That leads to deposits throughout the oil passages.
DO NOT DO A MOTOR FLUSH!!!!
You stand a good chance of plugging those passages and frying bearings if you do. You simply cannot know what is inside there.
On a high mileage engine like that, I’d personally go to 20/50 Valvoline and call it good. Additives can’t erase time.
A couple years ago I did a 400 Ford HiPo build for a desert truck (79 F250) with a Boss351 cam/Edelbrock/Holley/porting...all the goodies. I started with 20/50 Val and a Zinc additive (current oil lacks it and its needed for old flat tappet cams/not new rollers).
That engine will live and die on it forever and ever, amen.
An additive at that stage is the time to start using it, but I just don’t see the benefit even in that scenario.
Good synthetic oil with a good filter changed often will do more than all the additives in the world.
It is awesome stuff! I used about one qt over the last year exactly by the instructions /Runs cooler -increases mpg-power is noticed immediatly.
I have a 90 toyota 4runner 3.0 v6 with 370K on motor I use 5-40 rotella synthetic oil. I never leave oil in longer than 5K miles due to the obvious (carbon) even though oil has got awesome luberosity.
I wouldn’t know why running a high quality motor oil or synthetic, suited to your application, couldn’t produce the same results. There are so many specialty oils on the market now, there is something for everyone. I run oil with zinc in it in my old stuff with flat tappets. The racers use it.
Motorkote doesn’t seem like too expensive an experiment. $25 bottle at Amazon treats 2 V8 engines. Can’t hurt to try and see if you notice a difference.

Thanks, Laz. That's good advice.
Thanks for the testimonial, Tigen. You're the first person to chime in who's used the stuff. Based on your experience, I just may treat my engine with the stuff after I change the oil this week.
Much appreciated!
I forgot to add another benifit at 40-50 below wind chill temps cold starts best ever!!!
That's good to know, although I've never seen it get colder than maybe 10 degrees where I live. Thanks again.
I know nothing about the product. But the entire concept of “testimonials” which were once thought of as being good sales boosters is quite perverted.
Do you really think that an advertisement would be produced wherein an end user said “this stuff sucked, it did nothing, and my engine blew up shortly after I added it to my oil”.
Just sayin’. Testimonials (particularly from strangers or in an ad produced by the mfr) = sub-worthless.
I hear you. It's why I sought out independent Freepers' experience and opinions about the product. I also thought it would be a fun conversation for the wee hours crowd.
Thanks.
“They beat the *iss out of Mark Davis”
Why, sh*t fire and save the matches, my old 8-track could do that.
Gee, you mean a website trying to sell a product has “testimonials” saying the product is “FILL IN THE BLANK”??
Go figure. The old saying, if it sounds to good to be true....
My rule of thumb, if the aviation guys won’t put it in their plane, it sure won’t go in my truck..
There is a limited use for some of the “snake oils” in high mileage engines or early engines, rebuilt classics, etc. For the most part though, forget it. Stick with quality lubricants and proper preventive maintenance.
A long, long time ago I used Duralube in my high-output CRX (12.1:1 compression, lots of motor work done). I travelled from CT to CO, and my head gasket blew in eastern PA. I made it all the way to Indianapolis before getting sick of dropping coolant in the car every 200 miles. (It was out of coolant in about 80)
I replaced the head gasket after arriving in Colorado and finding a mechanic. The engine showed no extreme wear, and I got another 130k out of it before the body finally fell apart. That motor is still in another person’s car, doing just fine.
Just a FYI. Wind chills have no effect on a engine. They only get as cold as the air temp.
Aaaahhhh.......... another “Miracle in a can” product...
