The hearse is not integral to the plot, but it is one of many indications for the sort of person Harold is.

Harold is a young man who is obsessed with death. He drives a (standard) hearse. In an attempt to help him become more normal, his mother sells the hearse and presents him with a beautiful, pearl-grey jaguar.

Turns out Harold is pretty handy with tools.

Maude is a woman who eventually teaches Harold to be less fond of death and more accepting of life.

Sorry to be so tardy in responding (had to go to bed early—as usual—last night).

“Harold and Maude” sounds interesting and I’ll look into getting a DVD of it.
