I think they listen to the rehearsal and take notes. At least, Paula used to. Remember Jason Castro, the contestant with the dreadlocks? I remember a time when she gave him a bad review on a song he hadn't even sung yet. Turned out Paula had gotten confused and accidentally read her notes from the rehearsal!
