In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
argot; noun
1. a specialized idiomatic vocabulary peculiar to a particular class or group of people, especially that of an underworld group, devised for private communication and identification: a Restoration play rich in thieves' argot. 2. the special vocabulary and idiom of a particular profession or social group: sociologists' argot.
Etymology: 1860, from Fr. argot (17c.) "the jargon of Paris rogues and thieves," earlier "the company of beggars," from M.Fr., "group of beggars," origin unknown. The Eng. equivalent is cant. The Ger. equivalent is Rotwelsch, lit. "Red Welsh," but the first element may be connected with M.H.G. rot "beggar."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
No Dave. I read about 20 or 30 pages in a half hour or so, then put the book down for days or even a week before reading more.
my problem with books like Ann’s is that I read a lot online, so when I pick up her book I feel like I have heard it all before. then I put it down and look for something else. sometimes I don’t even finish them. I haven’t bought a book from one of the talking heads in a few years now because of that.
Thanks for the kind words.
Home from uselessly trying to collect money owed-all I hear is that they are broke till the end of the month. Thanks a lot-now, so am I...
Anyone can learn the argot
That the Obama cronies speak
Just by traveling to Chicago
And staying for about a week
It also would be helpful if
They’d find the kind of bar
Catering to Mafia and union types-
They won’t have to go too far
Because there, as in DC now
Every dissenting voice is tracked-
The difference is that in Chicago
Those who don’t shut up get whacked
Black Ice is also one of my favorite mens’ colognes...
I’ve always had a great deal of sympathy for Jackie Kennedy-with all her money and notability, she did not have a happy life for the most part-it seems to me as though people were always telling her what to do, and she didn’t know how to tell them to STFU and go away. And believe me, it is no fun to live with a cheating spouse-at least most of us don’t have to worry about a huge scandal if we get fed up and throw the bastard out.
From all I’ve read, her only happiness was at the last of her life with that married guy, Maurice. I think she just finally gave up and let death come to give her peace.
Yes xshub will never miss even a smidge of SU news. The jailbird recanted. So who knows what that means, if anything about the others. We are hoping to go up to see one of xsboys games in early feb and maybe see a basketball game too.
A ++++ good job. Wish you could get paid!
Thank you! I wish I could get paid, too-I’m tired of catfish and chicken with only broccoli, tomatoes and carrots for fresh veggies, and would dearly love a steak to grill with maybe some asparagus to steam-eating only fresh food has its downside-but I’ll bet it is worse for other working class people who are total vegans...
At least the sun is trying to come out and it is getting warmer outside.
Looks like your bad weather is headed right to me. Thanks.
She dated Amo Haughton a lot at the end as well. He was a U.S. Congressman and owner of Corning, Inc. He was from my hometown.
Xshub should enjoy SU beating the tar out of a reeling Pitt tonight.
Too bad his wife can’t recant that awful phone call......there is still something there.
50 degrees tomorrow and snow by Wed morning.
I’m not familiar with the name-that is really interesting, though. Apparently, she was secretive to the end-from all I read about her, I always suspected that she had come a bit paranoid after living in the fishbowl, and that it was one of the reasons she married the totally inappropriate Onassis-so she could hide on an island.
He’s worried that Pitt will suddenly regain some semblance of composure and play out of their minds, bc this would be 20-0 should SU win. As Paula said Pitt is just flailing in the toilet and it’s sad.
Explorer89 and I were reminiscing about pittsburghisms and I recalled one that makes me LMAO— nebsh!t... Hilarious to me right now!!
She’s a loose piece of change at the very least.
That's rather sad. I blame myself.
I've probably spoiled you for such pedestrian writers.
That’s “nebnose” in the PG-rated version.
Please define “nebs***-is it like dips***?
He escorted her to the Kennedy Center and many Washington events. She would stop in the Corning/Steuben Store in NYC and meet him. They dated for over ten years. Once in a great while there would be something in the hometown paper about it. My mother’s friend worked for the Steuben store in Corning and would often fly in to the city to hand some product. Very high end stuff. She met Jackie there, saw her many times while in the city. Usually, Amo would be with her. I found it amusing as Amo was a Republican. His father was an ambassador to France at one time, I believe. Last time I saw Amo was at DH’s cousin’s funeral. He spoke at the funeral and had nice things to say about him.
