A cruise ship with up to 4,000 people on board ran aground on the island of Giglio, off the Tuscan coast, on Friday night, and UK media reported that at least two people died.
The Telegraph said some passengers jumped from the steeply listing Costa Concordia and swam a short distance to the island. A photo in the Telegraph showed the brightly lit ship teetering just outside a harbor wall.
Sky News quoted coast guard officials as saying two people died.

Prayers for the family of the 2 dead.
Seems like an awful accident. Right next to the pier
Why would you jump from a ship that had run aground?
Haven’t you ever been on a cruise. Some passengers are in constant party mode and aren’t exactly sober.
Strange. I’d say this line didn’t have much of an emergency plan. It sounds like people didn’t even realize they were right next to the dock.
The article said that some people had gotten into lifeboats...and were still missing.
I would assume that they’re all on a beach in some local small town, but still, it’s odd that a liner with some 5,000+ people on it didn’t have a better communications and emergency management system. Lawsuit, lawsuit...
That’s not a pier. The structure you see in the pic is the end of the breakwater that is at the end of the entrance to the harbor. Note the lighthouse. Google map the city.
Good catch!
Thank you!
Still seems very odd to have that accident. It seems like well marked territory.
The way they made it sound as if it was an unexpected shoal

I would guess they lost power, or controls for the thrusters.
That’s a really narrow harbor it looks like.
Was there no harbor pilot?

eastland rolled over at the pier in the chicago river in 1915 killing over 800 souls.
Titanicoli?
Oh I missed the part where this ship rolled.
To take advantage of the warm waters of the Med!
Good point. I just assumed human error.
Such a beautiful neighbourhood I’d jump too, and ask for asylum!
