What does the 2012 crop of New Year's babies foretell? A quick glance will confirm that when it comes to the new generation of American baby names, creativity rules there's no longer such a thing as "normal." The first babies of the year include an Daytona, an Akier and an Envy (yes, Envy), but nary a John or Mary to be seen.

This week, in N.O. paper I saw Kal-El! That goes on the list with Tsunami and Teriyaki.
Of course, IMO, nothing beats Toi’let.

A Roshanda by Any Other NameHow do babies with super-black names fare?
From the article:
"Today, more than 40 percent of the black girls born in California in a given year receive a name that not one of the roughly 100,000 baby white girls received that year. Even more remarkably, nearly 30 percent of the black girls are given a name that is unique among every baby, white and black, born that year in California. (There were also 228 babies named Unique during the 1990s alone, and one each of Uneek, Uneque, and Uneqqee; virtually all of them were black.)"
It makes it tough on teachers (and Scoutmasters). The only study of which I'm aware concludes there are "no negative relationship between having a distinctively Black name and later life outcomes after controlling for a child's circumstances at birth."

I was named the executor of an uncle's estate and had to pick up multiple certified copies of a death certificate in Dougherty County, Georgia. To do so, I had to sign a public register in which you stated the name of the person for whom you were requesting a birth or death record.
I wasn't surprised at the number of birth names containing an apostrophe. I wasn't even surprised at the number of birth names containing two apostrophes. The winning name on the request page that was visible had five. I wish I had written it down. Then again, I'm seeing more boys named McClintock and girls named MacCauley.

My friend had a daughter last year. She wanted to give her a unique name, something that no other girl in her class would have. I have a dog named "Twice"
He won't come if you call him Once.

They named me Jason, which was pretty unusual at the time. Ten years later, the name became one of the top boy names for newborns. In the mid 80s, I coached a Little League team, 5 of the starting 9 boys were named Jason.

What? There's not a Muhammad on the list! Proof that Americans hate Muslims and are racists. [sarc off]
