Rasheem Morris and Steve Spagnuolo already fired.
Are Rex Ryan and Norv Turner next?
As a fan who watches way too much sports talk I love Ryan, very entertaining. But I think Brandon Marshal put it best when he said now it’s time to shutup fat man. Boom and bluster is great when your team is doing well, but they haven’t won the division under him, no home playoff games, and this year no playoff games at all.
He looked better than most rookie QBs yes, but he wasn’t a rookie QB, yeah he hadn’t played but he’d run the practice squad for years, all the prep just not the time. And he really didn’t perform that well, he did an OK job managing games. The first few games they had to run him almost entirely out of shotgun because he wasn’t reading defense fast enough under center. That improved.
I’m not saying he was bad, I’m saying he wasn’t worth a franchise tag. Giving a player the franchise tag means they get paid the average of the top 5 players at his position. He wasn’t a top 5 QB, he shouldn’t have been getting paid top 5 money. Then the Chiefs traded the farm to get him (at top 5 money) from the Pats, he wasn’t good enough for what they traded. He’s a workman QB, a solid C+ who should never have been tagged and shouldn’t have been traded for more than 2 second day picks.
We already see what he’s got. Having a target or two won’t improve his accuracy or his ability to read defenses pre-snap. When you’re regularly missing the target by 5 yards that’s not on the receivers, or the linemen, or training camp. That’s just plain not being a good QB. When you go 6 of 22 for 60 yards that’s not on the receivers or the linemen, that’s just plain being a BAD QB.
Well they did fire Angelo. And Lovie’s post game interview leaves a lot to be desired. And Cutler wasn’t playing that well at all, certainly not second best in the league when 2 guy not him or Rodgers broke the single season yards record.
Well, Angelo is to blame for the problems they had. Chris Mortensen said that about Cutler - playing well as in leading the team to victory as opposed to individual stats: he was single handedly covering up the massive shortcomings the team had. No Offensive Line and the worst receiving corp in the league. And yet they had won five in a row, were beating good teams and were well on their way to a high seed in the playoffs.
If the Pats fire Bill they’re crazy. 13-3 and home field throughout is only a disappointing season for people with unreasonable desires. Bill needs to get some of his poached staff back, and the defense needs a serious youth movement. But don’t screw with the chemistry of perennial contenders.
They don’t have the worst receiving core in the league. One of yes, but Denver, Buffalo, Jacksonville and a bunch of others are down there worse. The Bears biggest problem was Martz, he’s a terrible offensive coordinator, over addicted to trick plays and slow to develop plays. Add a head coach with no will to shut him down and you get a QB getting killed every other play. Notice as soon as they stopped doing all that stupid Martz stuff Cutler stopped getting killed on a regular basis, same o-line, different plays. Their o-line was never great, but it was a lot better than they looked at the beginning of the season. And Lovie should have reigned Martz in during the pre-season, everybody knew the Bears didn’t have the people for his offense.
It’s fashionable to blame Martz but again he was in charge of the same Offense that went to the NFC Title game last year and was winning this year before injuries and a lack of a competent backup QB sunk them. Name a single Bears WR who would start on other teams. Johnny Knox is a track star in a football uniform who consistently leads the league in passes thrown to him getting picked off. Earl Bennett is a decent Number 3 receiver at best. Hester is a great return man but an incompetent receiver.
It’s the fashion because Martz stinks. He’s always been an overly flashy coordinator. Yeah they made it to the NFC title game with the 28th ranked passing game and 22nd ranked running game. He’s not good.
Hester would start for another team, and Knox. Name a Bills receiver that would even be signed to another team, forget start.
Hester would start as a receiver?? He’s terrible!
Averaged 14.2 yards a reception. That’s only terrible when you have an idiot coordinator that can’t manage to get the ball to him.
Hester can’t run routes. He’s also short and doesn’t go up for the ball like a receiver should. His reception numbers were based on a few big plays where either the defender tripped or Hester just outran him going straight ahead. Overall he’s not a good receiver at all and trying to force him into that spot was a huge mistake.
Exactly right
Well maybe his offensive coordinator should teach him to run routes.
Look the problem for Martz is always the same. He like complicated plays. I enjoy watching games Martz is coaching because at least twice a game you’ll see a play that completely disintegrates in a comedic way leaving you with no idea what the hell they were even trying to do. It’s funny. When he was just a coordinator with the Rams they kept him in check, kept the smart part and wouldn’t let him do his WTF junk. Then he became head coach... And Lovie doesn’t keep him in check. 28th ranked passing game for 2010, 26th this year. Hey they improved.
You can’t teach someone to be good at one position if they don’t have the skills for it. Mike Tice is a great Offensive Line coach but even he can’t make the stiffs guarding Cutler any good. As for passing numbers, the Bears played the last six games of this year with awful QB play by guys who shouldn’t have been in the league so you can’t judge this year’s numbers. When Cutler was in they were scoring a lot of points during the five game win streak.
Just announced that Martz has resigned.
Except of course the offensive line performance dramatically improved, so Tice must have done something right. With Cutler for the whole season they ranked 28th in 2010, with Cutler out for a good chunk they ranked 26th. Where the finger should point is obvious to anybody that’s paid attention to Martz’s career, Martz. He’s a bad coordinator, period, and no amount of BSing about “stiffs” will change the simple facts that in spot after spot after spot the end results for Martz remain consistent, his QBs get sacked a lot, and the offense doesn’t really produce. Everybody that hires him hopes they get the Greatest Show on Turf, but his stats show that was an anomaly.
It improved because the play calling was adjusted to make up for deficiencies on the O-Line. Matt Bowen, who is a brilliant NFL analyst says that Martz is very much an Offensive genius who sees things others don’t see. The problem is that he’s stubborn and won’t adjust for personnel. In any case he’s gone. Management made the mistake of thinking a first rate QB can lift awful receivers. Cutler was doing what he can and winning games but there’s nothing close to a starting NFL WR on this team.
I hope he doesn't get canned. His alligator mouth oveloading his hummingbird a$$ on a daily basis is an endless chuckle.
