The above quote is rife with typographical errors. Further, I'd like to ask if racoons were common in England at that time and if the practice of racoon-hunting was widespread there.

According to Dictionary.com, the phrase is early 1800s slang and Stephen Crane used it in “Red Badge of Courage” in 1894. I honestly don’t know where Churchill came across the phrase.
