Houston-area woman organizes breastfeeding flash mob at Target stores

Breastfeeding moms gathered around the country today, including about 50 in the Houston area, for “nurse-ins” in support of a Texas woman who says she was harassed last month while nursing her infant son at a Webster Target store.

The nursing flash mobs were planned in 35 states after women heard about the case of Michelle Hickman, who says employees made her feel uncomfortable when she fed her son at the store while Christmas shopping last month.

“I’ve gotten way more support than I imagined,” Hickman said today outside the Webster store.

The beauty of the protest, she added, was that nursing moms around the country could easily join in the action.

“This is something they can participate in from their own home, their own town. They don’t have to travel with a brand-new infant. They can go to the Target right up the road and support me.”

I am sorry you read something into my words. I never wrote anything about breastfeeding being sexual. That might be your own hangup about those who feel it is a private act to take place in peace and quiet. But we don’t all think it is something sexual. I just don’t think it should be done in the center of a shopping area with strangers and noise all around. I am more concerned about the peace and comfort of the child than the statement a woman feels she has the right to make for her own sake. If you read my entire post, you would have noted that. Seesh.

Helping you keep your 2yo innocence for a while longer? Do your kids have any contact with divorced people? I find that to be much more deleterious to innocence. When I see kids from divorced parents I see kids who have real innocence issues.

I welcome most chances to teach my kids about right, wrong, and the world.

I am of the opinion to treat my kids as humans to be protected but not as property that should be shielded.

One of the Mark’s on Rush today said that the woman said it is a natural event. He said “Well guys have natural events too. How would everyone react if men suddenly decided to act on their “natural event” at Target. lol.

Walmart and their shoppers tend to be more conservative

A VERY broad statement and probably not accurate. Anyway, I find Walmart stores to be filthy. Targets are normally spotlessly cleaned. I don’t like Target though because of their poor customer service. Also I don’t pick a store based on political reasons because you would be SHOCKED at how liberal ALL the stores are with their donations to various organizations. I tried to keep up with all that years ago when I first signed up to FR and found out that you basically can’t shop anywhere with all the political problems that stores have with regards to especially social issues.

I have always thought they should make a baby room in the stores. At least I would do so if I were going to own a business especially a store. They already have two restrooms and dressing rooms. They could have a nice room with couches, changing tables for diapers, a sink, and other needs. I think this would be a great marketing tool and people everywhere would appreciate it.

Where did you gets this information? Are these what you assume? I definitely doubt that Sears is Democratic. They have Kenmore after all....lol. The best warranty that you can get anywhere. I don’t believe Democrats are that great to offer such a thing.

joking is one thing- making fun of someones looks is another

I thought the thread where EVERY comment was about Michelle Obama looking like wookie in a tablecloth was not something we should be doing here - the DUHmmies over at DU make those kind of comments

My comment about Megan Fox breast feeding is intended to be humorous and not insulting of any one’s appearance- and if you think seeing her breastfeeding is low class then you should check your hormone levels.

I for one am NOT going to participate in another thread where you comment on the classlessness of another woman’s boobs, especially Megan Fox. I bet you think that girl on Seinfeld was not ‘specatcular’ too.

Chillax, dude

The tone on this thread seems to suggest that all women who publically breast feed are doing for attention and I just don’t see that at all.

Absolutely agree. I'd say that 99+% of the women I see breastfeeding, may be in a public place - but are discreet about it. I've seen mothers sitting on benches in the entry way of Walmart breastfeeding their babies. They have a baby blanket over their shoulder, and are discreetly doing this. I have no problem with them whatsoever. Good for them, they are feeding a hungry baby; as nature intended.

It's the militants that use the baby as an excuse to parade around topless, that irritate me. They know full well, that if they pulled the exact same stunt, without a baby attached to one of them; they would be arrested for indecent exposure. The baby is the excuse.

I didn’t say YOU thought bf was sexual, I said it was a shame that women feel they need to feed their child in a back room BECAUSE some people view bf as sexual.

There is no reason to feed a baby in a dressing room unless you WANT to.

I BF all three of my kids and by the time the 3rd one came along I decided that I didn’t want my baby eating in a public restroom or dressing room any longer to hide the act because of someone’s weird idea that bf equates with something sexual.

talking is natural- we don’t accept it in movie theaters.
there’s a time and place for everything.
I’m sick of “lacktavists” claiming it’s them against the world.
yes, I’m mock them.
