The first and only gun I ever bought for my wife was for protection at home while I was working graveyard shift and some of the local non-Amish bad guys (Berkeley/North Oakland 1961) were breaking into homes and raping in the middle of the night. It was a little Beretta 22 cal pocket pistol.
If I were doing it today it would be something like
this 380:
Not great stopping power as things go these days, but it is small, easy to shoot, has laser sight, and should do plenty of of damage at close range, especially with hollow point ammo.

Beretta Px4 Storm, .40 S&W, full size.
Just got it for practice. A great piece of work. Sadly they were out of extra stick mags. Going to pick up more for the rest of the family.

I got a box of .357mag ammo and a brand new sniper stock for my Model 700 30-06.
Now I need a new scope, flash hider and a bi-pod.
It will probly shoot like crap and I will just hang it over the mantle, admire it daily but never shoot it.

I thought I heard that those guns were illegal, but I might be wrong.
I know they are cheap.

I’ve never fired a gun before. I’d like to learn but I admit I’m a little afraid of guns.

I bought a Jap WWII rifle, type 99, a few months back. This got me really interested in historic small arms.
For Christmas my wife bought me an 1880's Martini-Henry manufactured in Nepal. It's a mess, likely never will be fired, but it will be fun cleaning it up.

We purposely "downsized" on my gift...a Remington "Air 77 BB/Pellet Rifle"!
This'll be my (sort of city dweller) tool for ridding us of the damned squirrels that have been dining on our citrus.
We've got an orange and grapefruit tree that would kick ass at the Riverside County Fair, but the blasted little suckers have found them, and need to be offed - this new addition should do the trick.
(The Mossberg was only gonna get us a visit from SWAT....)

Does anybody have any suggestions for what type to get as a first-timer?
.20 Gauge scattergun with the short 'home defense' barrel.......aiming nor skill not required - just a few trips to the outburbs to ingrain the racking and trigger pulling skills.
Wifey weighs less than 90 pounds (hence the .20 gauge for less recoil), and she's become quite the afficianado.

Ive never fired a gun before. Id like to learn but I admit Im a little afraid of guns.Do you know any responsible gun owners in the family or neighborhood? Go out shooting with one, maybe chip in for ammo. You'll have a great time.
Commit the safety rules to heart and you will be okay. One habit you will need to break is the tendency to grab the trigger. Every time you pick up something with a trigger—squirt gun, spray bottle, etc.— you probably grab the trigger. It's natural and everyone does it. If you can get in the habit of pointing your index finger instead of curling it around the trigger, you shouldn't ever have a problem with an accidental firing.

I don’t know anyone who owns a gun.
I know you have to remove the clip and make sure the chamber is empty before cleaning a gun so you don’t shoot yourself or someone else and to watch out for recoil. Keeping the safety on when necessary is something else that I know to do.

Where can I get a Saturday Night Special?
Fire up the Tom-Tom and key in the following: "Martin Luther King Blvd" in your city -- you'll get your coordinates stat.

I hope the sniper stock fits your Model 700 better than the ammo!

Nice present. I've had one of
these Browning Buckmarks for a couple of years. Shoots real nice. I'd like to get one of these reflex
sights, but it's pretty pricey, including a special mount. Next year maybe.
