'Anonymous' hacks Stratfor clients credit cards, gives to charity

The hacking group "Anonymous" on Sunday Christmas claimed it has stolen thousands of credit card numbers and personal information of clients of the U.S. based security think-tank Stratfor and pilfered funds it gave away as Christmas donations to charity.

Anonymous said it stole information from organizations and individuals that were clients of Stratfor, including Apple Inc., the U.S. Air Force and the Miami Police Department. They said they obtained more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

Huffington Post reports that some clients of Stratfor have confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards. Stratfor is a company providing services to help clients manage risk. The company charges subscribers for reports and analysis it issues. Huffington Post reports that the company's main website was down in Sunday with the message: "site is currently undergoing maintenance." Most of the victims, according to Huffington Post, were individual subscribers and not companies and government agencies. Anonymous in a Twitter message taunted Stratfor, saying: "Not so private and secret anymore?" The group promised that Stratfor was only the beginning of attacks to come.

Anonymous claims that it was able to steal as much as 200 gigabytes of information from Stratfor because Stratfor did not bother to encrypt them. This revelation, if true, is a serious indictment of a security services-related company. The hackers published a list of what they claimed was Stratfor's client list and tweeted a link to encrypted files with stolen names, phone numbers, emails addresses, credit card and account details. The hackers claimed that the information they have published so far is only a small part of what they stole from Stratfor.

1. How about they try a REAL target, like the Chinese or Russians.
2. Death penalty for hackers.

How embarrassing . I have been a member for many years and now am at risk. The fact they left CC info on the server that was not encrypted is plain dumb.

Experts on security?

Huffington Post reports that the company's main website was down in Sunday with the message: "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Why not just come clean, like "We are under a hack attack. More info to follow." Like my webhost operates: "As you may be aware already, our network, and potentially your account, was the target of a large scale website defacing attack on Sunday, September 25th. We understand and share the upset and frustration felt by all of our affected customers. Please know that we are working as fast as possible to help all customers repair their sites."-Tom

“Death penalty for hackers.”

All hackers, of just those who hack organizations that are in agreement with you?

I was going to put “(assuming they are not Chinese of Russian)” in my reply! I knew a fellow freeper would call me on my omission...

My guess is that they are stupid Americans+Canadians (65%)/British (20%)/ Other European (10%)/ and other countries (5%)...The Russians hack very well on their own, and the Chinese have entire cities and universities devoted to taking us down.

These clowns are the very definition of useful idiot. They will never attack anything evil—they’d rather kill the golden goose that gave them everything they enjoy—because there’s much less risk in doing so.

Hackers (not backed and protected by a national government--) who: 1. steal credit card information and commit various other types of fraud. 2. undermine economic security and destroy confidence in financial institutions 3.Threaten national security, by stealing classified tech secrets from corporations and military institutions, or by leaking sensitive documents, strategy, etc.

Never use a credir card or debit card on line. No matter how secure they say the site is. If the comany doesn’t have a snail mail address to send a live check to then don’t do business with them.

There was a book in the 70’s that explained how they were planning to put us under total control it was called “The Velvet MonkeyWrench” by John Muir. It was an ‘underground’ dream back then but now it’s almost a feat completed and ounce completed it will be very hard to undo.

I had my identity stolen.
I have no problem with killing these people.
Or thier parents.
Or thier kids.
Why, is that a problem?

They are not “hackers” any more than someone who jimmys your front door to loot your home is a “finish carpenter”.

They are THIEVES!

PERIOD!

Among a certain portion of the public, “Hacking” is cool, like shoplifting.

Is dropping one of these thieves with a shot from 500 yards murder, or simply “target practice”?

Let’s call a spade a spade.
