ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Matthew Quain still struggles to piece together what happened after a trip to the grocery store nearly turned deadly. He remembers a group of loitering young people, a dimly lit street - then nothing. The next thing he knew he was waking up with blood pouring out of his head.

The 51-year-old pizza kitchen worker's surreal experience happened just before midnight earlier this year, when he became another victim of what is generally known as "Knockout King" or simply "Knock Out," a so-called game of unprovoked violence that targets random victims.

Sadly, it is simply not safe to be around many young Black males. Not all, of course. But enough to make it prudent to avoid places where they are likely to be. Most are places you wouldn’t want to be in any case.

Thanks for the ping. Yeah, bah humbug, and all doom and gloomy but this sort of thing is only going to get worse as the economy tanks. Of course, then they’ll be grabbing your wallet, jewelry, groceries and probably the car keys.

The family just left from the morning Christmas-ing and early dinner and as we sat around the dining table, everyone was talking about pricing going up and paychecks going down. Even the ones who don’t pay attention to the news. FYI, the gift haul this morning was the sparsest I’ve ever seen and I wasn’t the only one who went the homemade route. Others sheepishly admitted to grabbing things on sale throughout the year which is something they wouldn’t have mentioned in years past. Very telling, uh huh.

I used to work for the state juvenile detention and no one, NO ONE, wanted to work with the girls. The boys could be reasoned with but the girls would just as soon knock your head through a wall as to look at you. Nasty, horrid creatures. If you see a gang of girls, get the heck outta there fast.

Oh, but you can't do that today. It's so un-PC. What about the poor inmates' feelings?!? And you know he's innocent, whaaa!

At 68, I feel exactly the same...And, I carry a gun everywhere I go.

I think that anyone out at night who sees a crowd of "youths" should be on high alert and make sure that they remain in one's field of observation/fire. I suspect that I would already have my hand on the pistol and ready to either show the herd I was armed or to fire as required.

Logically, the best thing to do is avoid all of those areas where those predators exist and certainly stay home at night but on those occasions where it becomes unavoidable, I recommend any caliber starting in "4".
