Don’t you love the dwarves singing? The beginning kind of reminds me of the song Aragorn sang at his coronation in the White City.
The trilogy held very close to the book.
Yes, there were some scenes cut like Tom Bombadil, but most of those scenes would have been either unnecessary or just plain confusing to the non-LOTR fan.
How LOTR ends:
Frodo claims the Ring o Mount Doom at the Crack of Doom.
Gollum knocks out Sam and attacks Frodo.
Gollum bites off Frodo’s ring finger and, gloating, trips and falls into the Crack of Doom.
Frodo and Sam leave the Crack of Doom, succumb to fumes, are carried away by the Eagles.
Frodo and the remainder of the Fellowship rest for some months in Minas Tirith, then take a scenic tour back to the Shire.
Mary, Pippin, and the Hobbit’s of the Shire rise up and rout Sharkey’s gang that have occupied the Shire.
Frodo confronts Saruman (Sharkey) and Wormtongue. Wormtongue kills Saruman and and is in turn killed by the Hobbits.
Frodo is Mayor for a couple years. Sam marries Rosie Cotton and starts a family.
Frodos wounds haunt and plague him. He decides to leave the Shire for the West. Sam goes with him as far as the Grey Havens.
There they meet Gandalf, Elrond, Bilbo, and Gandalf. Merry and Pippin also turn up (having been tipped by Gandalf).
There is a final farewell to Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel. They take ship and take the Straight Road into the West and to Valinor.
Sam, Merry, and Pippin return to the Shire. Sam becomes Mayor for many years and raises a large family.
All are great friends to the end of the days. Aragorn lives a very long life and finally decides to “lay it down” and dies. Arwen returns to Lorien, lives there a year, and finally lays down her life there.
Legolas and Gimli, many years after that, go into the West together. The last of the Fellowship.
In the West is where the elves originally came from. It is where they went back to.
Frodo, Sam and Bilbo did die in the West, because they were mortal, but it wasn’t an allegory. It was just where they died. The elves being naturally immortal, did not die.
I slogged through that finally a couple of years ago. More to keep straight than I really wanted to bother with.
Some read Shakespeare until it is memory, some read Greek tragedies and commit them to memory ... I have read the Trilogy of the Rings so many times, I’m sick of it, but yet I read them again. Sick I know, but I can’t help myself.
No, Sam and Frodo (and company) return to hobitville and kick some series ass.
No.
Frodo didn’t die in the lava in the book. He lost a finger when Gollum bit it off to get the ring.
Gollum then fell into the lava and perished.
I should have added:
The book we know as The Lord of the Rings was (in story) begun by Bilbo, nearly completed by Frodo, and finished by Sam.
Long years later, Sam turns stewardship of the book to one of his daughters and leaves the Shire, presumably to go into the West and to the Undying Lands to be with Frodo.
AAAHHHH!! We are so there. I can’t imagine anyone else other than Peter Jackson doing this movie. My whole family loves the movies.
BS. The movies were great, but nothing like the books. Have you read them? I have read the trilogy over 50 time in the past 30 years. The movies were somewhat close but not near what was portrayed in the books.
I’ve read the books three times.
How was it differnt, in your opinion?
I should add that Gollum would have perished shortly after anyway, because once the ring was destroyed, you start aging again and you quickly catch up to your where you should be, which in Gollums case was dust.
Once again, if you have read the books more than once and viewed the movie you wouldn’t have to ask the question. If you have to ask the question, I doubt you have read the books.
Not sure whats worse, someone who can’t remember what the Hobbit was about or someone who CAN remember the difference between the Vanyar, Nolder, and Teleri and how Feanor is Fingolfin and Finarfin’s half brother.
If the 2 Hobbit movies make big money like LOTR, they just have to find a way to make the Silmarillion.
Movie 1 - ends at Fingolfin’s arrival back in Middle Earth (Star Wars-a new hope)
Movie 2- ends at Fall of Gondolin (Empire Strikes Back)
Movie 3- ends at Valar’s final war on Morgoth (Return of the Jedi)
Movie 4- ends with fall of Numenor
Movie 5- ends with last alliance
It’s on the gigantic ceiling high 4.5’ wide turning table contraption you built. Somewhere. Spin it and see.
“In the West is where the elves originally came from. It is where they went back to.”
Actually they originally came from the east but thats just dork nitpicking - lol.
What the heck was Galadriel doing in The Hobbit????
If you can’t answer the question, just say so.
I have read the books. The only scene I am familiar that was missing was the hobbits encounter with Tom Bombadil and the man-eating oak and how the ring had no power over Tom.
Peter Jackson said he left it out because it wasn’t necessary for the essence of the movie and that it would have interrupted the flow of it.
The wonderful thing about literature is that the reader has an interpretation of the author’s work and this often conflicts with how a film-maker will interpret the work and this is where sometimes dissatisfaction develops because the reader disagrees with the film-maker.
The Silmarillion would be many, many movies. I don’t think even Jackson could do it justice.
Can’t wait for “There and Back Again”. I want to see Smaug.
