Ten to sixteen ounce bars of gold and silver or old gold Double Eagle coins all sound good and look pretty, B-U-T only for the long term. For buying a loaf of bread or a pound of bacon when the SH's, it will be kinda expensive to buy it with a $12,000 gold coin.

It's up to you, and you alone,to decide on something you could live (or die) to regret. Don't rely on us dummies for advice on what most of us know nothing about.

DITTO. If you look at SHTF worst scenario food, water, extra meds, guns and ammo are first. Prec metals in the form of junk silver is one of the best ways for barter. Dimes, quarters, and half dollars are good. Get some gold just in case you must flee US to Canada or overseas. Never forget passport.
I prep. But I assume bank holiday and currency reset similar to Mexico, Argentina, Serbia. Prec metals is basically to protect purchasing power, while food is to hold one over for about six months and guns for protection when cops are no longer paid. Gov probably declare emergency, food is rationed while banks are closed and dollars are reset to a new value.
If bankers and Fed Reserve manages this crisis it will be gradual inflation to inflate debt away while middle class savers will be destroyed as purchasing power of dollar erodes. Trick is to have precious metals to preserve buying power.

Check with your local coin dealer for pre 64 junk silver coins. Expect to pay a little less than spot price, currently at $28.82 per oz. That means 1 dollar of silver coins (10 dimes, 4 quarters, 2 half’s) will cost you about $28.00. Silver dollars will cost a little more.
Silver is silver. Don’t pay a premium for fancy silver coins or bullion bars.

Better to buy guns, lead, booze and smokes to prepare for the barter society.

I want to add one thing.

If you have to flee the country, do what Jews fleeing Germany did to carry their wealth with them: they sewed packets of diamands into the seams and hems of their clothing.

Pray we never get to that point, but if we do...

Simplest way is to buy coined silver, which is able to be used as “money” in that scenario.

IMHO, of far greater trading value in “end as we know it” (and prior to the “cannibal” phase of straggling survivors) would be:

Quantities of .30-06 Springfield., .270 Winchester, .30-30 Winchester., .308 Winchester., .243 Winchester., and 7mm Remington Mag, Also, 22 LR rounds in tradeable quantities, .223, and “Russian 30-30”—7.62x39. Self defense rounds of distance/accuracy and common usefulness, as well as in hunting. Not specialty rounds. The natural disaster scenario does not resemble the WTSHTF times. Can’t beat a .308 Win. supply.

Be aware of those around you. If you plan to bug out-— aware of those where you’ll be going, as to what will “trade” well.

Multiple undisclosed/un-discussed storage locations, BTW.

First thing first: DO NOT buy PM’s over the web. Find a local dealer, keep abreast of what spot price is at any given moment via a smartphone app or other means, and be discreet. Buying over the web opens yourself up to all kinds of headaches: wire transfer issues, shipping problems, overpaying due to handling, shipping and seller’s premiums.

Make sure you are purchasing for the correct reasons. I do store PM’s as a hedge and savings vehicle. I do not anticipate them having any real value in a SHTF scenario. A lot of people wrongly assume that PM’s will lend themselves toward an ability to survive post-SHTF by giving purchasing power. This, likely, will not be the case. PM’s will be readily available for scavenging after these knucleheads pass away - even then, they will be for all intents and purposes: worthless for a while.

The words, “Give us this day our daily bread,” spoken in earnest to our Father in heaven; our Maker and our Redeemer, never fail. Obviously those who pray in such manner take “TSHTF” with a grain of salt in view of the fact this world is passing and a new heaven and earth are pending.

We live in interesting times. Always reason to give thanks. May your preparations yield much benefit to you and your neighbors. Meanwhile “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”

Ammo is the ultimate barter tender. But in addition to that... There’s an outfit here in WA called the Northwest Territorial Mint. They make a silver ounce round called “Stagecoach Silver” and on the reverse it says “For when you gotta get outta Dodge”.

I’ve always liked that. But the practical part is that their ounce rounds and squares are all pre-perforated to easily break into halves or quarters.

nice.

22Lr. Lots and lots of it.

It’s cheap, common, and you live forever shooting squirrels, birds, and other critters.

Try www.kitco.com. I don't think you can beat their prices.
Their customer service should be able to answer any questions you have, and they deliver by mail.

Ideas for extra cash:

Small investments-
Large value packs of bic lighters (trade good). Get a set up to refill from propane bottles. Extra or large propane bottles.

Learn to brew beer, have enough equipment to brew a good 200 gallons or so.

Get a still and learn how to brew ethanol. Fuel will be damn hard to come by and VERY valuable trade item.

Cold weather gear. Sleeping bags, wool blankets, wool socks, etc. Anything a boy scout would take on a camping trip.

Stock up on medical gear. Bandages, peroxide, splints, tampons (bullet hole plugs), OTC meds, sterilization gear (see the still below and look at investing in an autoclave $700 to $3,000).

Mid level investment -

A good guns and gold safe at home. Perhaps a couple extra ones around the house. Make sure everyone in the “family” knows the combination.

Small green house if you have land or back yard avalable. Even if things dont go very bad, a GH can extend the growing season, help reduce the cost of food.

Solar water heater. Cuts heating costs and can help keep the house warmer during cold months.

Solar or wind power generation. Even a little bit of power can help in bad times.

Bullet proof and fire proof at least a small area of your house. Think of a safe room. If possible, a bunker. Better yet, redo your siding and add a ballistic liner under the siding. Consider a spray on liner. The stuff they spray onto bedliners works very well over wood paneling or on the inside of a brick/block wall.

Multi-fuel generator. minimum 5000 watt.

Extra weapons and ammo. Reloading gear with extra powder and primers, dies, variety of brass, etc.

Junk silver to trade during the bad times. Real gold coins (not bullion) for afterwards. I would go with Canadian coins, not US.

A variety of car and truck batteries?? Not so sure on that one. My friend tells me that they are very valuable trade items. I’m not so sure. Maybe portable batteries?

Large investments-
Land works only if you know how to farm, have farming equipment (tractor, seed and disk at a minimum) can build on it, has it’s own water supply, Is close enough to get to, etc. Still, hard to beat having your own land. I am co-oping with other prepers.

If you have diesel vehicles, consider an underground storage tank.

I'm a strong believer in sterling silver chain. Easy to establish trade value, purchase wholesale in kilo lots (you might have to borrow a friend's resale license to get in the door.) And very easy to conceal in transport. I appreciate the exchangeablity of junk silver, but for a lot of people, it's just a curious dime or quarter, and not something of significant value.

Unfortunately, if TSHTF, coin shop owners (and pawn brokers) will likely both be the first to hit their bugout holes, and your trade will be with the general population.

Pick a nice medium-heavy weight chain in a style you like, and don't feel embarrassed or troubled to bargain hard on the final price - A lot of the major brokers are holding onto stock that was purchased at $10-$12 spot price. Be aware of the spot price of silver in gram terms, examine what you're purchasing, and buy away. If you plan on making multiple purchases over time, feel free to bring up some yarn about how you're selling them at office parties or the like.

And best of all, if that kid next door breaks into your house, your investment won't go towards Slurpees.

They had a destination if they got away.

.Where are you going to go nowadays?

If it all comes down around our ears, where in the world will it be not coming down as well?
