Tebow Critics Put Their Own Bigotry on Display
Jewish World Review ^ | 12/16/2011 | Linda Chavez

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has been a controversial sports figure ever since he agreed to do an ad for the conservative organization Focus on the Family; the spot aired during the 2010 Super Bowl. Feminists and other groups, who feared the ad would be overtly pro-life and anti-abortion, tried to keep it from running. In the end, the message turned out to be pretty innocuous, and those who tried to censor it looked downright silly.

Now Tebow is once again a target for illiberals who find his evangelical Christianity somehow threatening and offensive. The latest episode involves a recent column for The Jewish Week that bashed Tebow for symbolizing intolerance. But it was the writer, Connecticut Rabbi Joshua Hammerman, who put his own astonishing bigotry on display. Hammerman titled his piece "My Tebow Problem," and indeed it is Hammerman's problem — not Tebow's.

While claiming to want to root for Tebow, who has pulled off an unprecedented string of amazing consecutive fourth-quarter comebacks for his underdog team this season, Hammerman made the following prediction: "If Tebow wins the Super Bowl, against all odds, it will buoy his faithful, and emboldened faithful can do insane things, like burning mosques, bashing gays and indiscriminately banishing immigrants. While America has become more inclusive since Jerry Falwell's first political forays, a Tebow triumph could set those efforts back considerably."

Really?

That’s precisely what Tebow says: “God doesn’t care who wins a football game.”

Great video. I will show my kids, I think it’s a perfect example of sportsmanship.

Tebow is a national inkblot test...the haters reveal more about themselves that anything about him.

Tebow has worked 1 miracle...I'm cheering for the Denver Donkeys this year.

Aye aye Cap’n - I love Tebow - but my beloved Patriots are going into the Mile High House of Horrors (for the Pats it is anyway) and do what needs doing. #12 is due for a large day....

Religious bigotry is an ugly thing, rooted in the haters’ own feelings of inadequacy.

"Would you like some reading material?"

"Do you have anything light?"

"How about this leaflet, 'Famous Jewish Sports Legends'."

You know this demonstrates once again how low we have sunk in this nation thanks to the national media. Mr. Tebow should be judged on his talent and ability on the football field certainly not on his Christian (or any other) faith.

At what point did it become controversial to be openly Christian in this country?
I’m not Christian and have no problems with him. Let him pray and play ball. I’m all for it.

They criticize Tebow when he takes a knee in prayer after a win; what will they say when he takes a knee in prayer after a loss? It’s not about wining or losing.

I haven't seen any hatred of Tebow coming from the NFL network. What I have seen is both Michael Irvin and Deon Sanders offering nothing but praise and support for Tebow. And he has his share of supporters on ESPN, as well.

And it is perfectly acceptable to question Tebow's abilities as a QB. Those who do may end up looking silly, but it doesn't automatically mean that they are on an anti-Christian campaign.

They probably don’t know who he is because nobody outside of the US cares about football.

I don’t think God picks winners or losers in football games, or any other sport for that matter. It’s solely a matter of human to human skills...........

You may be quite correct about that. Personally, I don't know, one way or the other, because I have insufficient data.

But, I have abundant data on God's power and character, enough to know that I never want to (although I often do, anyway) limit Him.

That leads me to conclude that sometimes, for His own reasons, He surely does.

Seems the heat got a little too much for Rabbi Hammerhead.

Hammerman is indulging in a very common form of projection.

A malady from which most "Illiberals" (thanks for the term) suffer.
