Considering the machinations of the Roosevelt administration over the previous two years to aid Britain [and then the USSR] in WW II, which under international law would constitute co-belligerency; I don’t find Hitler’s actions to be lacking in logic. They were, however, ill advised.
A state of defacto war already existed. We were attacking their subs in the Atlantic regularly now and arming the merchant ships we use to send suppies to the UK. Also he probably underestimated the US. he probably had reports that the Grant tanks we sent to Africa were kinda bad. And also that they aircraft, P-40s, we sent weren’t anything that impressive. Up to a year ago the size of the US army was pathetic. There were pictures in the NY Times just a few months showing the army using fake guns in wargames beause there were not enough to go around. We just did not look like that much of a threat.
