TSA: Pistol design on purse not allowed

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Airport security agents say a replica gun is a replica gun, even if it was just a design on a Florida teenager's purse.

The Transportation Security Administration says its agents acted appropriately when they ordered 17-year-old Vanessa Gibbs to check her designer purse at the Norfolk, Va., airport because of the image of a pistol it had on it.

The agency said "replica weapons have been prohibited since 2002," and that means even a very obvious replica, said News4 Jax.com in Jacksonville, Fla.

Gibbs remains flabbergasted at the hassle, which she says caused her to miss her flight home and wound up flying into Orlando instead of Jacksonville, much to the consternation of her mom.

"It's my style, it's camouflage, it has an old western gun on it," Gibbs told New4.Jax.com.

What irked Gibbs the most was the fact she had taken the bag on the flight to Norfolk without any trouble from the TSA.

"It's a purse, not a weapon," she said.

“The person who held her should not be working for the TSA.”

That’s why they have no names or faces.

They are from the government, and they are here to help.

That’s all you need to know.

Back to my Cheetos© and MSM™ Football!

“What’s with banning replicas anyway. What the hell can a replica do to anyone?”

An otherwise exact but nonfunctional replica can be used to intimidate someone into doing whatever the bearer wants them to do. That probably wouldn't work on an airplane these days because someone would figure they were going to die anyway so they might as well try to resist, but it might work under other circumstances. It might work against an unarmed "mugee" who didn't want to take a chance on getting shot.

Some people seem to think that the only use for a firearm is to shoot or even kill someone as necessary, but many people use firearms as a projection of force to persuade someone to do or not do something.

I was watching “Pickers” the other night and they were looking at a Hopalong Cassidy lunchbox from 1950. The image on the cover had his gun drawn. I immediately thought today that would get a student thrown in jail.

when is an image a replica?

When the TSA says it is apparently.

A can of V8 could be considered a weapon because if you tape 3 cans together it can be used as a cannon.

This is stuff that belongs on the Comedy Channel not at airport security areas!

I can just imagine the penalty for carrying that purse AND having a tattoo of a bullet on ones arm too!

Replicas only intimidate people who are too stupid to tell the difference. To ban replicas is ridiculous and to ban a purse with an emblem on it is even more so. This is just another example of the extreme fear the government has of the individual being armed.

you could use it as a club?

This is getting pretty crazy, pretty soon they’ll ban drinks so we can all dehydrate... oh wait, they already did that.

Seriously, the last thing you want is for your jacket to print like you’re wearing a shoulder holster in an airport.

I suppose the next thing the TSA will declare contraband will be T-shirts depicting weapons. I went through checkpoints in Las Vegas and Orlando and it was obvious the TSA is a full-fledged, affirmative action employer. Just like POTUS.
