Are we going to let Obama get rid of Herman Cain the same way he got rid of Jack Ryan?

Posted on 11/30/2011 7:48:10 AM PST by E. Pluribus Unum

The smear campaign against Herman Cain is the exact same kind of smear campaign the media ran against Jack Ryan. Had Jack Ryan not been taken out, we would never have had a Senator Obama, and without a Senator Obama we would never have had a President Obama.

Campaign demise

Ryan married actress Jeri Ryan in 1991; together they have a son, Alex Ryan. They divorced in 1999 in California, and the records of the divorce were sealed at their mutual request. Five years later, when Ryan's Senate campaign began, the Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, sought to have the records released. On March 3, 2004, several of Ryan's GOP primary opponents urged release of the records.[5] Both Ryan and his wife agreed to make their divorce records public, but not make the custody records public, claiming that the custody records could be harmful to their son if released. On March 16, 2004, Ryan won the GOP primary with 36 percent to 23 percent against Jim Oberweis who came in second.[6] Obama won the Democratic primary, with 53 percent to 23 percent against Dan Hynes, who came in second.

On March 29, 2004, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider ruled that several of the Ryans' divorce records should be opened to the public, and ruled that a court-appointed referee would later decide which custody files should remain sealed to protect the interests of Ryan's young child.[7] The following week, on April 2, 2004, Barack Obama formally established his position about the Ryans' soon-to-be-released divorce records, and called on Democrats not to inject them into the campaign.[8] The Ryan campaign characterized Obama's stance as hypocritical, because Obama's alleged backers had been emailing reports about the divorce records prior to Judge Schnider's decision.[8]

In May 2004, two polls were conducted statewide where the Chicago Tribune poll found Ryan trailing Obama 52% to 30% [9] while the Sun Times reported that he was trailing Obama 48 percent to 40 percent in the U.S. Senate race, according to a new Daily Southtown poll of 500 likely Illinois voters [10] [11] On June 22, 2004, after receiving a report from the referee, Judge Schnider released the files that were deemed consistent with the interests of Ryan's young child. In those files, Jeri Ryan alleged that Jack Ryan had asked her to perform sexual acts with him in public in sex clubs in New York, New Orleans, and Paris. Jeri Ryan described one as "a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling."[12][1]

The decision to release these files generated much controversy because it went against both parents' direct request, and because it reversed the earlier decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child. Jim Oberweis, Ryan's defeated GOP opponent, commented that "these are allegations made in a divorce hearing, and we all know people tend to say things that aren't necessarily true in divorce proceedings when there is money involved and custody of children involved."[1]

Prior to release of the documents, Ryan claimed he had told leading Republicans that the divorce file could cause problems for his campaign.[13] After the documents were released, GOP Chair Judy Baar Topinka said of Ryan's comment "It may have been somewhat misleading."[14] Topinka said after the June 25 withdrawal that Ryan's "decision was a personal one" and that the state GOP had not pressured Ryan to drop out.[15][16] Ryan's campaign ended less than a week after the custody records were opened, and Ryan officially filed the documentation to withdraw on July 29, 2004. The same party leaders who called for Ryan's resignation chose Alan Keyes as Ryan's replacement in the race; Keyes lost to Obama, 27% to 70%.

"We may be headed towards a brokered convention."

That I would like to see. I can picture a certain lady walking onto the stage and giving another barnstormer speech just like last time. With the same reaction from the crowd, And the same reaction from the electorate. (positive!)

Please - Herman Cain is not only unprepared and not capable of beating Obama - he is a gaffe machine that will lead to electoral disaster.

He is imploding all on his own.

Funny, that. You could be talking about Ubama, except that state-controlled media will cover for him.

So it's Myth all the way to Hell, eh?

I hate Romney. HOWEVER - we need someone who can answer basic questions without cliche and empty nonsense. I like Bachmann, Huntsman, Paul at this point.

I will vote A B O no matter what in the general election, but Cain is becoming a laughing stock.

Maybe you should turn off your t.v. pacifier and actually reseach something, before opening your pie-hole.

Cain is becoming a laughing stock.

Maybe you're laughing, and that would show your immaturity and pettiness. But many of us don't find it funny that a man is being brought down without a single shred of proof from anyone that he did the bad things he is being accused of. Either Cain is innocent or he did the best job in history hiding the proof of every single bad thing he did with all these women. Ironically if that is the case it would put the lie to the Cain-hater spin that the man is incompetent and stupid

So how long will it take you to abandon them when the smears begin?

You wouldn't want to be associated with anyone that state-controlled media smeared, would you?

Smears? Cain brought this all on himself. If he is so naive to not think all of this was going to come out when he announced, he is not ready for POTUS.

His answers on foreign policy are wincing. Simply repeating 9-9-9 with a laugh to any serious question as if that is cute may work for a goof - but if you think that will convince people to vote for him over obama - good luck with that.

So how long will it take you to abandon the next flavor-of-the-week when the state-controlled media smears begin.

Except for Myth, of course.

Those smears won't start until he gets the nomination.

And you better believe they have plenty of ammunition. It's why they want him as the nominee.

All of what, exactly?

I defy you to tell me what it is he allegedly did.

The problem is that too many have no standards and are willing to just elect anyone with the title: “Republican”.

I don’t see a reason to BE in a different party than the democrats if we are going to elect people who are exactly the same as democrats!

Why not just elect John Edwards, he looks better than Cain.

60 texts in the middle of the night with a trashy woman? Did she invent those texts? Financial assistance? Did Cain tell his wife he was giving her $$$ and texting her in the middle of the night? Taking her to a tyson / holyfield fight?

You want to defend that? Go ahead and welcome barry for 4 more years.

Holding politicians to no standard assures that we all lose.

So sad that you don’t really have a valid argument or debate position that you must resort to personal smears against people who disagree with you...gosh, you really must be a democrat!

Seems the accusers are pretty adept at hiding the proof too. This has been going on for what now, four weeks? And still not a single shred of evidence. Nothing.

So texting is immoral?

You take the word of a bankrupt, convicted serial libeler/slanderer over the word of somebody who is none of those things?

You're even dumber than I thought.
