Are we going to let Obama get rid of Herman Cain the same way he got rid of Jack Ryan?

Posted on 11/30/2011 7:48:10 AM PST by E. Pluribus Unum

The smear campaign against Herman Cain is the exact same kind of smear campaign the media ran against Jack Ryan. Had Jack Ryan not been taken out, we would never have had a Senator Obama, and without a Senator Obama we would never have had a President Obama.

Campaign demise

Ryan married actress Jeri Ryan in 1991; together they have a son, Alex Ryan. They divorced in 1999 in California, and the records of the divorce were sealed at their mutual request. Five years later, when Ryan's Senate campaign began, the Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, sought to have the records released. On March 3, 2004, several of Ryan's GOP primary opponents urged release of the records.[5] Both Ryan and his wife agreed to make their divorce records public, but not make the custody records public, claiming that the custody records could be harmful to their son if released. On March 16, 2004, Ryan won the GOP primary with 36 percent to 23 percent against Jim Oberweis who came in second.[6] Obama won the Democratic primary, with 53 percent to 23 percent against Dan Hynes, who came in second.

On March 29, 2004, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider ruled that several of the Ryans' divorce records should be opened to the public, and ruled that a court-appointed referee would later decide which custody files should remain sealed to protect the interests of Ryan's young child.[7] The following week, on April 2, 2004, Barack Obama formally established his position about the Ryans' soon-to-be-released divorce records, and called on Democrats not to inject them into the campaign.[8] The Ryan campaign characterized Obama's stance as hypocritical, because Obama's alleged backers had been emailing reports about the divorce records prior to Judge Schnider's decision.[8]

In May 2004, two polls were conducted statewide where the Chicago Tribune poll found Ryan trailing Obama 52% to 30% [9] while the Sun Times reported that he was trailing Obama 48 percent to 40 percent in the U.S. Senate race, according to a new Daily Southtown poll of 500 likely Illinois voters [10] [11] On June 22, 2004, after receiving a report from the referee, Judge Schnider released the files that were deemed consistent with the interests of Ryan's young child. In those files, Jeri Ryan alleged that Jack Ryan had asked her to perform sexual acts with him in public in sex clubs in New York, New Orleans, and Paris. Jeri Ryan described one as "a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling."[12][1]

The decision to release these files generated much controversy because it went against both parents' direct request, and because it reversed the earlier decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child. Jim Oberweis, Ryan's defeated GOP opponent, commented that "these are allegations made in a divorce hearing, and we all know people tend to say things that aren't necessarily true in divorce proceedings when there is money involved and custody of children involved."[1]

Prior to release of the documents, Ryan claimed he had told leading Republicans that the divorce file could cause problems for his campaign.[13] After the documents were released, GOP Chair Judy Baar Topinka said of Ryan's comment "It may have been somewhat misleading."[14] Topinka said after the June 25 withdrawal that Ryan's "decision was a personal one" and that the state GOP had not pressured Ryan to drop out.[15][16] Ryan's campaign ended less than a week after the custody records were opened, and Ryan officially filed the documentation to withdraw on July 29, 2004. The same party leaders who called for Ryan's resignation chose Alan Keyes as Ryan's replacement in the race; Keyes lost to Obama, 27% to 70%.

See post 112.

You seem to think that you can just repeat your accusation that I'm smearing Cain as if that proves your point. POINT TO THE SMEAR, GIVE ME THE WORDS THAT SMEARED CAIN! You made the accusation, but now that you have to back it up you refuse. Guess I better be careful or you'll post the same thing 6 or 7 times.

Any highly successful person will cite the absolute necessity of not listening to people whose sole focus is negativity and criticism. I’ve given you upteen bajillion opportunities to link me to your positive, constructive comments on the conservative candidate of your choice. I said I would not listen to a thing you say if you cannot or will not to this simple thing. Do you have a reading comprehension problem? Yes, you do. Fix it.

DTxAg: I'll take FReepers unable to back up their arguments for $2000.
Alex: This poster makes charges that others are smearing his preferred candidate, but is completely unable to actually point to any smears and tries to change the subject.
DTxAg: Who is Fantasywriter?
Alex: Correct!

The sad truth is that Krugman is right about that 15%, and the sadder truth is that isn't going to change in this election cycle.

I haven't reached any conclusion about the allegations against Cain. What does trouble me is that he does not seem to be adept at fending off such attacks, and I think that's a political necessity for anyone trying to beat Obama. That's neither right nor fair, but I think it is the political reality.

Only an ignorant person, who has no argument resorts to personal attacks on the one who disagrees with them.

This is a thread about Herman Cain and his accusers; not about my motives or fitness as a poster on Free Republic.

Stick to the issue. Or go ahead and start a new thread on me.

I tend to agree. I would vote for BO the waterdog over Barry, anyday!

But, lets not give up or give in...fight for the a true conservative, candidate; one with some character and moral fortitude.

And you are still completely unable to point to a single “smear” I’ve made against Cain. I’m not letting you change the subject. Point out the smear! It should be easy, right? I’ve done it so much according to you, right? You say I did it recently in another thread, I even copied the post that got you upset, right? SO SHOW ME THE SMEAR!

You show me some positive posts you’ve made about even one single good conservative candidate, and I will once again start reading and responding to your posts. Otherwise, stop wasting time.

Exposing your obvious agenda is not a personal attack.....It’s not like I called you “ignorant” or anything of the sort.....THAT would be an example of a personal attack, buddy.....LOLOLOLOL

Of course you are right about the media having a double standard with Republicans and conservatives. Very true.

And good point about reacting to innuendo and smears. Like I said before, I was inclined to defend Cain until he put out such a disgusting statement.

From the facts in his own statement, I do not agree with his values, or his morals. I do not think he would be good for the country. He is not the guy I thought he was, or that he portrayed himself to be, if he could put out a statement like that.

His wife told Greta that she would not be standing next to him if an accusation of this nature were to prove true. She said she didn’t respect those women, (like Hillary) who stood up there next to their cheating husbands and looked like idiots. It will be interesting to see what she says and does next.

You made the charge that I’m smearing Cain. When asked to back it up, you try to change the subject and say you don’t have to back it up until I do something first. No deal. Be a man and back up your charge (otherwise, it’s like you’re making an accusation with no proof, the irony!). Until then, you’re the one wasting time.

Tell you what, I'll be the bigger man (once again) and do what you ask. Here is my post from not more than a few hours ago:

I don't like Cain for President, either. The lack of experience and knowledge on policy issues being two big shortcomings IMHO. But I tell you where he would be great -- put him in the VP slot and tell him his job for 8 years is shrinking and reforming every government agency he has time to reform (except those that get eliminated).

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2814050/posts?page=1#16

I said something nice. So now, having pointed out that I have said something positive, and about Cain no less, surely you will now provide proof of the posts in which I have "smeared" Cain, right???

Really, that COULD be innocent. My spouse and I actually do run a recovery ministry together. Many people of ill repute have our private cell phone numbers, and text us with problems at all hours of the day or night. We take phone calls from them, and HAVE helped them out financially.

This could have been an innocent relationship, and I would have been inclined to believe so, until Cain put out his statement saying that his “private sex life” was no one’s business.

I say, he is right. Mr. Herman Cain, radio commentator, head of a resturant association and private citizen; his sex life is none of our business.

But, as we have witnessed with many a world leader, a President with girlfriends (or a governor, such as the one in SC) certainly becomes our business. That kind of sex life can disrupt and ruin the work of a President. Especially when the President is a Republican! The press would never allow anything he said or did to be reported, they would constantly report on his bimbos and nothing would get done.

A man with such weak convictions could easily be seduced by and jump in bed with our enemies.
