Landlord John Miller will miss Thanksgiving at home this year after what may be Central Florida's first case of eviction rage ending in attempted-murder charges.
Miller remains held without bail in the Orange County Jail after crushing a mobile home with a large front-end loader while a terrified child cowered inside as a woman tried to save her, according to Sheriff's Office records.
"Good, then I got what I wanted," Miller, 51, said after deputies told him the roof had collapsed and the small trailer was uninhabitable.
The attack began Tuesday afternoon on West Ponkan Road near Apopka when 911 calls reported the Mount Dora landlord had been chasing his tenants with a front-end loader after destroying their home rather than waiting for them to leave Dec. 1. He previously has been charged with refusing to vaccinate a dog or cat against rabies as well as firing a gun in public, records show.

oh sure, blame the landlord.
It’s ok to think this guy is a piece of crap even though he’s the landlord. If someone doesn’t pay their rent, then kick them out. But that doesn’t give you the right to act like a mental case and try to kill them.
I don’t think he was trying to kill them. Instead I think he was trying to scare the crap out of them and also render his property uninhabitable so they would have to leave.
Say you hold a mortgage on the rental property and you're making the payments every month, but your renters aren't, plus you have your house mortgage you're making payments on, and you have been trying to evict the deadbeats for two years and now you can't make your payments anymore and you are about to be evicted yourself.
But it's easy to be self-righteous when it ain't your skin in the game.
He crushed the home while a child was inside the place. It may be a hair’s breath away from attempted murder. It is at the very least reckless endangerment. He needs the book thrown at him.
There are legal avenues open to a landlord that is trying to evict someone. You don’t need to burn down the apartment complex or destroy the trailer to kick someone out. If he had done it right he could have spent Thanksgiving with his family, and not been in jail.
Like I said to another poster. There are LEGAL ways of getting people out, without destroying the property to do so.
And there are LEGAL ways to put it off for YEARS, especially if you are Eric Holder's people.
But if you try to do it the way he is doing it, you stand a very good chance of going to jail.
from the full article...
“Valdez paid $150 a week for the trailer and had lived there for four months with her three children, brother and sister-in-law. She said she wasn’t behind in rent but upset Miller’s family earlier this month over the use of a table at a yard sale.”
So it wasn’t about rent payments at all. She paid her bills. He’s just an unbalanced asshole that didn’t want to wait until the agreed upon move out date of Dec. 1st.
He smashed the place while a child was inside. She was screaming at him to stop and let her get her kid.
Let this guy rot in jail.
He did go a bit overboard, but do you think that couple will ever get behind on their rent or try to stay in a rental without paying? More than likely not!
Sounds like the rent was current.
It’s always possible. People get behind on their rent all the time, and beg to stay and go through all sorts of things to stay without paying. Happens all the time.
But that didn’t happen in this case. The article said that she was current on her rent, but she used a table in a yard sale, so he was kicking her out. That’s fine too. If she did something that was against the lease, then by all means, get her out of there. Set a move out date (which was done) and tell her that you expect he to be out on that date, or earlier if she can. But he couldn’t wait 9 days. He bulldozed the place with a kid inside.
I am a landlord, and if I were ever to have a deadbeat tenant on my property I would have the county court send the sheriff to evict him or her.
Of course, I’m a sane, law-abiding person, not an piece of psychotic, turtle-eating cracker trash.
Hey! Hey! Turtle is good.
I use “turtle-eating” in the metaphorical sense, of course.
I personally don’t believe she was current with the rent.I’ve known people who have had to pay utilities bills for more than 6 months trying to evict people. One of them for spite started taking in laundry and being paid for it while the landlord paid the water bills....
You have obviously never rented out a property and had to cover bills for other people when they don’t pay.....
Exactly and some of them know every trick in the book about not paying rent and living scott free.I’d say the man was at the end of his rope and wanted them gone NOW.
That is what she is saying renter lie like that to the police often.
I used to be a landlord too.You must never have ran into what is known as a professional renter who knows all the tricks to say without paying a dime of rent.It can take up to 3 years to get rid of someone like that while you are paying all the bills.
