DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Livestock farmers are demanding a change in the nation's ethanol policy, claiming current rules could lead to spikes in meat prices and even shortages at supermarkets if corn growers have a bad year.
The amount of corn consumed by the ethanol industry combined with continued demand from overseas has cattle and hog farmers worried that if corn production drops due to drought or another natural disaster, the cost of feed could skyrocket, leaving them little choice but to reduce the size of their herds. A smaller supply could, in turn, mean higher meat prices and less selection at the grocery store.
--snip--
Matt Hartwig, chief of staff for the Renewable Fuels Association, called the effort to rewrite the fuel standard law "little more than a Trojan horse effort" to weaken or even eliminate it. He said the farmers' complaints were overblown and most livestock producers and meatpacking companies were making good profits...

DUHHHH!!!!!
Ethanol — just another ill conceived and impractical government scheme devised for political rather than economic reasons.
The obsession over ethanol needs to end. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about it. And lots of bad.
No offense beef producers your string of reasons beef prices are increasing are endless. Try the Adkins diet excuse again.
The call goes out for the Captain Obvious pic.
that was obvious out on the farms before they started.
Apparently they’ve never heard of dried distiller’s grains.
Actually, the cost of the entire T’day dinner is up 13%. Make no mistake, food and energy are both going up, along with all other commodities. 13% inflation is tame compared to the trainwreck created by a power-mad and greedy federal monster running trillion dollar deficits. This is part of the redistribution of American wealth to other countries. Using the phony argument posited by OPEC and the rest of the foreign oil interests is wearing thin—we all know they hate ETOH. Food prices continue up because we have 7 billion people and counting. And to think, the #1 health issue in America is obesity—apparently 50% of population would do well to consume less grain. Listening to all the carping about capturing sunlight energy and transducing it into ETOH is a poor excuse for the current crisis. What we need is a 30% across the board cut in federal spending and the required balanced budget.
This is the goal, it increases meat prices, PETA is happy less meat is eaten. Farms are too important to fail so the fascists take them over and they’ll be Union owned.

I am still waiting for someone to explain to me
how putting 10% alcohol in my gasoline
which results in a 10% reduction in fuel economy
somehow results in the importation of less arab oil.
And don’t even get me started on what this crap has done
to my lawnmower, weedeater, chainsaw, and pressure washer.
Corn is down $1.50 from the summer highs. Part of the reason is the switch to alternative feeds. Huh, imagine free market principles at work.
People on this thread are funny, the reason prices are going up due to inflation. Inflation is caused by increasing the money supply, ie printing more money. The fascists have taken food and fuel out of the inflation calculations just like they take the unemployed out of the unemployment numbers. Everything coming from the government is a lie, almost of our politicians are misleading us, even the republicans running for POTUS.
Think not, listen when any one of them gives the number of Americans unemployed, our the SS trust fund.
You are preaching to the deacon my friend. People like to pick on small groups vilified by the old media. Farmers are an easy target. Farmers are small in number, mostly conservative and non-union—an easy target for progs and others taken in by the foreign oil interests. Note how not one of this group even mentions that ETOH is not the only product—they never mention the remaining high protein feed called distillers by-products.
Unemployment does not count the 3 million college grads unable to find jobs. Real unemployment is about 18% and climbing.
That's the whole Agenda 21 idea, silly.
Alternative feeds huh, better by a hunting rifle and learn to feed yourself. Free principles at work!
