The ‘pristine bullet’ was the dead giveaway for me. The public at that time wasn’t as educated about ballistics and the condition of a fired bullet.
A lot of people forget Ike put Nixon on the ticket to mollify conservatives who thought he was too moderate.
A lot of people (around here) also forget that Nixon tried to soften the blow when Joe McCarthy was condemned (not censured; they couldn’t get the votes with “censure” in there, so they changed it to “condemn”); meanwhile, JFK took some time off for some back surgery so he wouldn’t have to cast a vote on either wording.
