What Shapiro doesn’t seem to realize is that in the Classic Studio System days actors would play a persona. Even character actors. Cary Grant has been called the greatest actor in film history because of his technique and ability to be likable and unlikable at the same time. And he was certainly always playing ‘Cary Grant’.
