It’s been almost two years since I posted at Big Hollywood regarding the Top 10 Most Overrated Directors of All Time. I’ve had a chance to reflect and think about the crimes I committed in that post. And, to paraphrase Mr. Eko from the greatest TV show of all time, “Lost,” I ask no forgiveness because I have committed no sin … except leaving Spike Lee and Tim Burton off the list, that is.
So, because you all enjoyed that list so much, and because I apparently have a death wish, it’s time for another: The Top 10 Most Overrated Actors/Actresses of All Time

Rene Zellwegger (sp). Just awful and thinks she’s Meryl Streep.
Sophie’s Choice is a work of art.
I actually usually like Streep. I don’t have a problem especially with her recent acting. She is becoming more comfortsble with vulnerability. I think she’s getting better maybe.

I think aniston gets roles because she is consistently good in the rom-com, great facial expressions, great hair, and always looks 35 years old.
Funny - I never saw Groundhog Day until recently. It is a piece of culture and references are made to it often, so when I saw it on some channel I watched it. Wow. I agree, his acting was very good in that unusual piece of film.
Good question. For me, being a Western history buff, it was how authentic to the period the film looked and felt; from the guns, holsters, clothes, saddles and Victorian dialog, I felt Hollywood finally got it "right." For many of my cowboy and buckaroo friends (I live in the rural West) it was much the same, including the outstanding horsemanship demonstrated in the film.
For my law enforcement friends it was the peace officer "law and order" angle that got them. For most Americans I think the "Justice is coming" theme resonated with them. After all don't we all dream of the Earp brothers and Doc cleaning up the riff raft and criminal element in our own towns and even Washington D.C.?
You're right about Powers Booth's performance, he was outstanding, in fact everyone acting in the film was. My wife normally has little interest in Western films but she loved Tombstone. It is just great entertainment with some of the most memorable, and quotable, lines in movie history.
Netflix kept recommending “Lenny” to me. It stars Dustin Hoffman as Lenny Bruce and was directed by Bob Fosse. I had never heard of it, didn’t know much about Lenny Bruce, and am sort of neutral about Dustin Hoffman, so I streamed it one night nothing was on TV. I wasn’t expecting much.
Dustin Hoffman really blew me away. I can’t even really put it into words (and you know how rare that is for me LOL) how amazing he was. When I was finished watching it, I couldn’t believe I had never heard of the movie before. If you are interested, it’s fantastic movie.
BTW, since I’m here, my list on the most underrated/under-appreciated actors/actresses:
Fred MacMurray - Remembered mostly for light comedy and good guy roles, but did so much more. Watch The Egg and I or a couple episodes of My 3 Sons, and then watch MacMurray in Double Indemnity, The Apartment, or The Caine Mutiny.
Harvey Keitel - Sort of the poor man’s DeNiro. Not the best looking guy, but a very gifted actor. Smoke, Blue Collar, Reservoir Dogs...
Aaron Eckhardt - Anyone who can pull off the sympathetic boyfriend he played in Erin Brockovich and the monster he played in In the Company of Men has serious acting range.
Humphrey Bogart - Yeah, I know Bogey is already considered one of the greats. I still say he was underrated, because he rarely got a chance to do something outside of his “leading man” character. When he did, as in The Caine Mutiny and In a Lonely Place, we got to see just how versatile Bogey really was.
Harry Dean Stanton - Great in everything he’s ever done. Doesn’t matter if it’s Alien, Paris Texas, or Pretty in Pink, he’s always top notch.

Hoffman came down with a cold during filming of LITTLE BIG MAN. His voice was so raspy he hoped to use it in his old man scenes, but he healed too soon. Before shooting the old man scenes he screamed at the top of his lungs repeatedly to try and get the raspy voice again.

She wasn’t bad on the eyes in FLESH AND BLOOD.
ReZe is boring to watch and painful to listen to.
Meryl Streep may be overrated in so far as people praise her to the skies for her accents, but she gets the job done.
George Clooney really isn't much of an actor, but isn't that what old Hollywood was all about?
Cary Grant and Gregory Peck weren't really acting. They were just being more or less themselves in roles that required a character more or less like themselves.
Same with Spencer Tracy and Ronald Reagan then. Same with Clooney now. Come to think of it, same with Katherine Hepburn (and Audrey Hepburn for that matter).
Bogie.
I wish I could watch Ground Hog Day for the first time again. After the 50th viewing it gets little predictable.
Her acting in Delores Clayborn was godawful.
I am going to commit HERESY and say....JOHN WAYNE.
His early films were cheap and can be overlooked. Beginning with STAGECOACH he got good roles clear through the mid 1960s His JOHN FORD movies are great! Then with MCLINTOCK he fell into a rut and all his characters were the same. Just change the shirt from a faded red one to a faded blue one.
His last good role was in THE SHOOTIST.
And yes, I have seen all his late 1960s and ‘70s movies at the theater.
Top of my list, Adam Sandler and Will Ferrel.
