It is the debate that has been raging between generations of science fiction fans.
But Star Trek star William Shatner believed he had delivered the coup de grace two months ago when he delivered a stinging critique he thought proved his franchise was superior.
But there is a new hope for Star Wars fans, as original cast member Carrie Fisher has struck back with a rebuke that could return the Jedi-filled universe back to prominence.
In a somewhat rambling YouTube video, the Princess Leia star let rip on the rival sci fi favourite.
She said: 'They are not in the same league. i mean they have the word star in the title, and there is space travel.
'Where do they go to, Klingon? It just sounds like a laundry detergent.'
The successful actress and author had a list of grievances with the television and movie franchise that she said made it inferior, including lacklustre visuals, make-up, toys and video games.
She said: 'Show me a special effect, maybe they are just effects, they are not called special effects.

Neither is the much scorned Wesley Crusher for that matter. Star Wars is eons ahead of Star Trek in the "most annoying character" category.
Here's the embarrassing hilarity...
Horner uses a four-note ‘evil’ theme that has probably appeared in 30 scores—that’s the one in Aliens and ST2. Years ago I wrote about this and I still believe what I wrote then, which is that the post-production on Aliens was so horrendous he altered his writing style from that point on. He is talented, but he’s lazy. He steals from everyone, as well as himself, and it’s too bad, because he doesn’t have to.
Babylon 5, Firefly and Farscape are my more recent favs. I love space 1999 first season and ST: TOS.
“BTW, Carrie Fischer looks hideousbad face lift or what?”
You couldn’t lift that face with a tractor beam...
And yes Carrie Fisher should get it right when criticizing ST. You're right. There is NO planet "Klingon". I liked the Star Wars first episodes, but they will never hold a candle to TOS.
Put my vote down for Star Track!
Oops, didn’t catch the other folks scared by “Dragon’s Domain”. Apparently I’m not alone. There is a whole thread on Imdb devoted to that one episode. The rest of Space: 1999 was kind of lame.
I had no idea that some stations banned it from broadcast. For GOOD reason.
The overwhelming time slot used by the syndicated station in the US was 7:00 on Saturday nights. Little wonder some said no to that episode in 1975. Today, a nine year old would shrug.
Star Trek is about us exploring the universe, which sometimes included conflict. Star Wars is about some other humanoids’ dealing with war in their part of the universe. Three war movies in a row was enough, and the prequels didn’t interest me at all
This is one of the silliest arguments ever imagined.
HOWEVER: technologically speaking, any so-called ‘civilization’ in a galaxy ‘far far away’ that was unable to conceive, develop and implement TELEPORTATION (transporters) is clearly inferior to the civilization that DID.
In addition, the Jedi got fat and lazy (and obviously blind) if they were unable to sense and detect the presence of a Sith Lord literally in their faces Senator/Chancellor Palpatine) until it was too late. (”ohhh, our arses, sitting on them we were!”)
In contrast, the United Federation of Planets proved to be more stable and trustworthy, with a few minor disruptions from time to time.
Finally, nowhere in the technologically-inferior Star Wars galaxy did they ever figure out how to ‘slingshot’ themselves back in time. Probably too busy levitating X-wing fighters, and showing off fancy light sabre moves.
And it is doubtful that any of those characters in Star Wars would be able to stomach the Klingon ‘Gagh’, as did several Star Trek officers.
And ‘Force’ or no ‘Force’, the Klingons would have made mincemeat out of the Empire’s ‘Clone Army’. Not even close, the Klingon battle cry would have been “IT IS A GOOD DAY FOR CLONES TO DIE!”
I LIVE for this stuff (Hollyweird showing its true face).
A micturation contest of galactic proportions!
Mom..”a girl is on the phone”
Me...”tell her call back i’m watchn Star Trek
YES!!!
B5, because of it’s depth, is harder to “get in to”, but absolutely worth it, unless you just like action and pop-culture fluff. That’s not to say that entertainment for the sake of entertainment (Star Wars) is never worth watching, but Babylon 5 is much more a believable, thinking person’s show (with Star Trek somewhere in-between.)
What I want to know is: What kind of person thinks the quality of anything is determined by how many Google hits it gets? Google “Obama” and then “Reagan”.
