(Vanity) Can you send Christmas trees to a soldier?

Had an interesting question from my father: I have a nephew stationed over in Afghanistan. My dad wants to send him a small artificial Christmas tree, lights included. Is that allowed or even possible?

Any FReepers out there have any knowledge on this?

I think you can, but hopefully someone will come along who is sure. When our boys were in the USMC in Iraq, people sent all types of things like that.

Sorry, can't do that - seeing this is Obama's new PC military, but you can send him:
A Holiday Tree
A Winter Soltice Tree
A Kwanza Tree
A Ramadan Tree
An aluminum Festivus pole.

Yes,I sent one a few years ago. Lots of sites allow you to order and send to an APO address.

Sending a artificial Christmas tree should be no problem.

Send it soon. Unless he’s at one of the big bases like Bagram or Camp Leatherneck, it might take a while to reach him.

Can't remember exact size, but it was a lighted one that was in a box. 2 or 3 feet I believe.

I know they all liked it!

I did just that early on when my dau(ghter was in Iraq. I sent a small tree and got some generic ornaments. I had all my friends autograph an ornament with Christmas geetings.

Fanntastic! Dad’s tree is about 3 ft. tall. He bought the tree not knowing if it was even possible. Research is NOT one of my Dad’s strong suits. :)

I’ll tell him to go ahead and send it.

He’s at Marmal. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

We sent artificial trees donated by a local Wal-Mart back in 2004.

Don’t see why you can’t still do it.

Try to get it to fit a flat rate priority mail box. Saves a lot of money on postage

I was sent a tree while in Iraq. While I appreciated it I only used it once for our unit Christmas party. After that I donated it to a Christian Iraqi family. The father said his kids had never had a Christmas tree and he was very pleased to get it.

I sent a small one with lights to my dau and son when they were deployed in Iraq. The only thing my dau couldn’t use was “halloween items that made sounds, like screaming sounds, ghoulish laughing sounds”. They were going to have a Halloween party and she was so excited to decorate the tent..But her Captain said No to the loud items because of conveys coming in for some down time; it would freak them out...they were coming in there to get R and R and they were afraid with some having PTSD it would set them off...

No problem at all sending a 3 foot tree. However, you have to send it airmail priority, and as it won’t fit in a cheaper rate troop support box, then you may have to pay high postage depending on where you live. East Coast is cheapest for APO addresses. West Coast is expensive to mail from if not using the flat rate troop support boxes supplied by the post office.

Conversely Marines use the Fleet Post office which is located on the West Coast and is cheaper to mail them over-sized boxes from there.

We regularly send 6-7 feet pre-lit trees to bases in the war zones, and the Walmart box it comes in just makes it in the post office sizing limits of what they will ship.

You’ll need to pick up a customs form at the post office to fill out for the package. I’ll ping you to our troop support thread with the number of the post where information is on how to fill out the form.
