(Orrville) - J.M. Smucker Co. is recalling some 16-ounce jars of its Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter Chunky sold in several states because of possible salmonella contamination.

The Orrville, Ohio-based company says the jars covered in the recall would have been purchased in the last week or so. They have ``best if used by'' dates of Aug. 3, 2012 and Aug. 4, 2012, plus the production codes 1307004 and 1308004.

Salmonella is bacteria resulting in fever, cramps and diarrhea that lasts for several days and can require hospitalization.

Smucker says no illnesses have been reported.

The product was distributed in: Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, north Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.

I’m not sure the source is from not roasting the peanuts properly. It might be in the processing plant itself - in the equipment or somewhere along the line it’s gotten into another ingredient.

In the cantaloupes that were infected with listeria, it turned out it didn’t come from the melons in the fields, but the packing plant. So, all the melons that the farm left in the fields to rot thinking they may be infected, were okay.

I’m not being sarcastic, but isn’t peanut butter easy to make at home. What would someone need? Peanuts and sugar or honey in a blender or food processor?

> possible salmonella contamination
Why to we call it salmonella?
Less than a hundred years ago they would have called it typhoid.

Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter
Is there an "un-natural" peanut butter on the market?
Synthetic PB ... ugh.

Well, FWIW, my money’s in contaminated peanuts that weren’t roasted hot and/or long enough to kill the salmonella.

The natural stuff, which is very good, BTW, is made without hydrogenated veg oil. You have to stir it before you us it, but it’s better for you than the stuff made with the hyrdrogenated oil.

“Is there an un-natural peanut butter on the market?”

I think the natural doesn’t contain any sort of sugar/sweetener. I have tried it once and it just wasn’t my cup of tea. The brand that I tried had to be stirred before each use and I missed the sweeter flavor.

I have to admit I was thinking the same thing. Starting to stay away from the mass marketing FDA approved food-stuffs.

I wouldn’t need sugar or honey.
