Ideally, when you read this little romantic tale, you should be listening to "Dueling Banjos".
All I can say is, "Paging Jerry Springer. Jerry Springer, please pick up the white courtesy phone."

I use 190 proof Everclear as part of an oil painting cleaning solution. I wouldn’t recommend drinking it; can’t even buy it here in Florida.

That's East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee are not involved in this particular hillbilly stereotype. I say that as a person whose East Tennessee grandmother had an uncle who married his first cousin. So far the most inbreeding I've found in my line is a possible instance of second cousins marrying.

The old joke is that in parts of Tennessee this is foreplay: “You awake, Sis?”

I have cousins that look like they could be Matthew McConaughey's better looking brothers. It kinda creeps me out watching his films when he has romantic scenes. Too close for comfort and we're not even related, lol!
No joke, when I married the first time, I chose a man born in Springfield, Mass so there was no chance of being remotely related to him, LOL! In a moderate-sized county like Knox (432,226), you can't talk badly about someone because I guarantee you they are either related to you, related to your in-laws, grew up with, or goes to church with whomever. Kidding aside, upper E TN was a very isolated area like most of Appalachia. From the time this area was settled until the mid 20th century we were primarily ag with family farms that subdivided as families started their own families. Industry has never been booming here (by and large). There was nothing to draw outsiders here. Now, however, we get a lot of Northern retirees that can afford to buy the prime real estate on the lakes that the Federal government took by emminent domain from families for public utilities (TVA). A few decades pass. TVA then turns around and sells those same properties to developers for upscale residences.
Geez, I'm chasing rabbits here. Sorry to digress. Personally, I know of only one couple that were 1st cousins, went to school together, and married.
