Lengthy article with his history and that of the talkers. Follow the instructions in the NM PING list below to read the rest of it.

A good reference: “Code Talker,” written by Tijeras author Judith Schiess Avila, was released chronicling Nez’s life and the contributions of the Code Talkers to the war effort. Available at Amazon.com

Navajo Code Talker Chester Nez, 90, poses at his home on Albuquerque’s West Mesa in this May 17 photo. He is the last living member of the U.S. Marine Corps 382nd Platoon, comprised of 29 Navajos who developed a secret code the Japanese were never able to decipher. Shi’chii ahe’hee. I can’t know what he endured in battle but I understand the worlds he crossed and taboos violated. I am proud to be born of Navajo.

Had the great pleasure of interviewing all five a couple days after the White House ceremony. Chester, though, was whom I’ve had the most contact with over the years, and I’m glad to see he’s still around, but it looks like the last couple have been hard on him.

He’d be the first to remind anyone and everyone that he may be the last of the original 29 code talkers, but he is not the last one.

Another interesting read is about the Choctaw and Commanche code talkers of World War I and II. Somewhat contaminated with the college liberal viewpoints, the book contains loads of great original material, just have to sometimes skip a page or three when he gets going on his preachy rants.

I have a picture of 2 Code Talkers who attended the Page, Arizona Veterans Day Parade. A buddy was in attendance and he posted their picture. Dan Akee and Bahe Ketchum, who was Grand Marshal of the parade were wearing Marine Corps garb.

God Bless them!

I’m not sure if this is ok, but here is a link if you want to check it out. I’m sure the mods will let me know if it’s not ok.
