Paterno deserved to be fired, but there are others who deserve it as well. In fact, I think jail is in order for some of them (i.e. the guy who actually witnessed a child rape and didn’t go immediately to the police).

If I'm driving down the road and see you getting beat to death beside the ditch do you want me to keep driving to find a cop, or stop and help you?
The obligation decent adults have to protect kids and women and the weak is even greater than the obligation to protect other adults who might be able to defend themselves. It is a vital part of civilization.
If we stop fulfilling our obligations it is not possible to hire enough cops to protect our society.
