No American flag, but at least they didn't ignore us completely.

Call me a cynic, but I think they have a different agenda. My feeling is they believe we should leave Afghanistan, Iraq was unjust, and the service members are victims of failed policy.....specifically Bush policy.

Don’t worry they’ll make up for it by ignoring Pearl Harbor Day and D-Day.

The yellow ribbon is not pro-soldier. It’s YELLOW for a reason.

Agreed, but even an insult is a step up from their usual total neglect.

What are you on about? It’s a clear reference to “Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘round the Old Oak Tree.”

Ft. Benning, Ga, has a yellow ribbon tied around a tree on damn near every street. Go tell them it’s not pro-soldier.

Young whipper snapper has no idea. Has he never seen a John Wayne movie?

It is almost an insult to our Cavalry soldiers to say it is ‘anti-soldier’ and imply the other ‘yellow’ meaning.

A Yellow Ribbon says “run from your duty and come home!”

That is not the tune of a true trooper.

A true trooper comes home when duty is done.

They should fly a flag, light a candle in the window, or post a blue star. Something that is respectful of the duty of the trooper gone away. The yellow ribbon is a call to abandon a scary duty because it is scary.

No it doesn’t, never has, never will. There are three main sources of the Yellow Ribbon when it comes to the Military. 1. From the British Navy when wives put yellow scarves outside their windows to welcome home sailors (so they can see it from the ship. 2. The Yellow Ribbons where the bandannas worn by cavalry solders and they would often give them to their wives and girl friends when they went off to battle (memorialized in John Wayne’s movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon). & 3. They were made more popular in the Iran hostage situation when people around the country put them out until the hostages were returned (part in part to the song making it popular). Since then, it has been a symbol that one has loved ones in combat and they are left out until they return. I see them all over Killeen for Ft Hood soldiers.

It has never symbolized running from your duty or cowardice, and frankly, considering the history of the relationship to US Cavalry regiments, it is an insult to even imply such.

Rush hour didn't happen this morning in NJ. The commute was very light, a testament to the number of government hirelings here.

There is no one so blind as one who refuses to see.

Numerous corrections and you still insist it simply MUST be the way you see it, not the way thousands of others throughout history have seen it.

Meaning is amorphous, but the meaning of a yellow ribbon tied around a tree is pretty clear from the historic context of the innumerable yellow ribbons put out in recognition of innumerable warriors - it is a civilian recognition that our forces are out there and we await their HONORABLE return.

I do not accept the history so claimed, what was linked to by mhering prior was a historical survey of a weak sort, designed to prove what it hoped could be proven.

I am telling you in my considered view that such displays produce a mindset of running away from duty rather than commitment to it.

Well your view is unconsidered and ignorant.

When I was serving in Desert Storm, my mom tied a yellow ribbon around an Oak tree on her property. She was not in any way encouraging me to shirk my duty and I, as well as innumerable other warriors serving overseas, resent what you are attempting to say the act implies.
