Mass:

The entire case against Penn State turns on one episode which began on March 1, 2002. Grad assistant Mike McQueary saw a naked Jerry Sandusky sexually assaulting a naked boy in the shower at night in a deserted locker room. Rather than call the police, he called his father. The next day, McQueary and his father reported this to Joe Paterno. The following day, Sunday, Paterno reported this to Tim Curley, AD, and the administrator who I believe was the head of the University Police, Schulz.

McQueary’s statement to the grand jury, according to the presentment, was he witnessed anal intercourse between Sandusky and the boy. Paterno, Curley, and Schulz all maintain they were not told of any specific sexual activity. Only that the grad assistant witnessed something inappropriate. The stories do not match up. Curley and Schulz were charged with perjury, as apparently the government 100% believes McQueary, and not Curley and Schulz. I’m not sure why Paterno was not charged with perjury.... but then all the Grand Jury testimony is secret, so you don’t know how Paterno testified.

The father in question is Mike McQueary’s father. McQueary is the witness. No one knows who the boy was... he is unidentified.

How many kids have been raped since 2002? How many would have been raped if Paterno had done the right thing after his superiors made it clear that they were NOT going to.

Respectfully, no.

Sometime in 1998, the University Police investigated incidents (plural - more than one) involving Sandusky and boys in the Penn State football showers. This was apparently known within a broad power circle at Penn State. I don't want to read the GJ presentment or the GJ findings again (I don't have the stomach) for it, but I don't believe the University Police report was shared with outside law enforcement.

The DA received a report of molestation from one mother in 1998, but the DA determined that he did not have enough evidence to prosecute.

In 1999, Sandusky announces his surprise 'early retirement.' Instead of being dismissed from Penn State football, he is given emeritus status, including an office in the athletic building, a parking space, internet account, keys and access to the athletic facilities (including the football locker room and showers), and tuition discounts for his adopted sons. He'd known Joe Paterno since he played for him in 1965 and 1966, and had been a coach under Paterno for 30 years, and retired as defensive coordinator. More importantly, Sandusky is given access to football-related inside events, such as the ability to bring boys to sidelines, pre-game banquets, and athletic facilities - after he's been investigated for showering with boys in the football showers.

In 2002, a janitor observes him orally sodomizing a boy in the football showers, but doesn't report it to the police. The other janitors find out about it. You may speculate whether Paterno is kept in the dark about the actions of his good friend in the football showers.

Finally, we have the 2002 event. What we are never told in the GJ presentment or findings is what McQueary says he told Joe Paterno. Joe Paterno says he was told "fondling" or something that may have been sexual.

McQueary should have stopped the rape in progress, but he told everyone else involved that it was anal rape. The question is: what did he tell Paterno?

And Paterno did not tell the head of the University Police.

Schultz was the Senior Vice President of Business and Finance. The head of the University Police reported to Schultz on the org chart. (Saying Schultz was head of the University Police is like saying Obama is head of the FBI, because the FBI reports to him). But Schulz never told the University Police, child welfare, or any law enforcement. Nobody at Penn State did. Not McQueary, Paterno, Curley, nor Schultz. Nobody even tried to find out the identify of the preteen boy who was anally raped.

Paterno's defense is he did the bare legal minimum that was required of him, and then never followed up. Yet Paterno wasn't a man of legalism; Paterno was a moral authority.

Frank Noonan, the Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner says that Paterno had a moral obligation to report the incident.

The most bothersome thing is that Paterno spent his career guiding young boys and men. They were 17-18 when he scouted them, and about 19 when they came to his care on campus.

In announcing his retirement, Paterno said "I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today."

Well, he didn't look after the best interests of pre-teen boys not officially in his care, but in his showers. Since 1998.

You believe incorrectly. You should look up the facts and stop reposting what you saw other Paterno-bots post. Curley was charged with NOT reporting it to the police. Curley reported it to Schultz ... ERGO, Schultz is NOT the police.

Think!
