Had an old Irish uncle who would fit above description. Definitely not Gay. He was also a drinker. Usually several pints after work at the mill. He probably realized no woman (except his Mom) would accept such behavior. Don't be so influenced by our present day-and-age. In other eras, people were more simple, and not so obsessed by sex, and there was no media that shoved it in their faces.
Sure, that may have been more common in times past, but the fact is that people back then who knew Hoover were always speculating about him, whether or not the KGB decided jump in and push the rumors. I think the KGB just tried to take advantage, they didn’t create the suspicions.
I agree with your assessment. Somewhere I had read of a classic explanation for that state of being. Simply put, the person is so involved in their own world and certainly with people who are wedded to a career - description is apt. That being a "Professional Bachelor".
The lovely lady who is also a pianist and who did so well in the Bush administration fits that description. I bear in mind the wise saying that "one cannot disprove a smear". Not completely true in every case, but there is just no hard and fast rule to crush a smear. That is why the lefties use smears.
