What could happen ~ well, they could mess around with it and aim it at the wrong thing ~ let's say the Sun ~ and that might start a supernova.
That'd be pretty bad.
Worse would be they open up to another universe or dimension that is totally incompatible with ours and that precipitates a total meltdown of both our plain of existence and another one.
I think God would be angry with that.

Maybe nothing? In chapter Five of Daniel, a being reaches from a different where/when, into the where/when of the Babylonian king and writes on the wall, then pulls the arm back to the being's where/when. The Bible shows that there are other 'dimensions', other where/whens, and that there can be opened connections from one to the other. The event described in Daniel sacred the pee out of the king, but there is no indication that terrible destruction to the environment was wrought in the event.
On another note, Jesus leaving the burial clothes to exit the tomb without rolling away the stone seems to have left an imprint upon the wrappings ... if the shroud of Turin is His burial wrapping.

That's will and has, not could. Cracks will form in reality which will be projected into the past and eventually destroy the universe.
It already will has happened.

There is a solution, but it involves a time travelling alien, a 2000 year old artificial Roman centurion, and a Lady Archeologist.
