This is California.. why, oh why, do I get the idea that some idiot will actually want to have a public funeral? The death of a tree.. boo hoo hoo.

That’s pretty harsh, the history of that tree is extrodinary
and it was a living thing standing tall for hundreds of years, that alone deserves some respect. You sound so angry. It’s amazing that you can’t see the sadness of a giant tree dying after all those years, and with your screen name, momofthree, what kind of sympathy did you teach your children? I feel sorry for you.

It’s a friggin tree!

The dirt in my yard is older that than that tree. The rock in the corner is older than the dirt.

Lets sing Kumbaya.

I agree.

This tree has been more useful for hundreds of years than most people are during their entire lives.

And no that doesn't mean I am an OWS hippie, or that I "am posting on the wrong forum". It means that without trees humans would be pretty bad off, and without humans trees would be better off.

Having a sense of awe and reverence for nature is a good thing.

Mom2three made a perfectly reasonable prediction of the likely reaction of lachrymose tree-worshippers in California:- and suddenly it's like she burnt down Fern Gully and the Smurf village on the same day.

We can indeed all respect the story of this grand old tree without holding a teary candlelight vigil. Mocking the misplaced emotions of tree-hugging hippies is one of FR's core directives - it's probably written in our vision statement.

Our realistic attitude towards trees doesn't make us Saruman: we are stewards of the earth, not its chief mourners.

Dear Tyrone13. It is a tree. It is dead. Trees die. Get over it. And before you start your enviro-preaching about what I should teach my kids, you may want to check that you aren’t on DU.. this is FR.

Are you some kind of idiot?

Death is certain here on the accursed planet Earth. Everything begins to die from the moment of beginning.

Its unfortunate that a cult of Earth worship exists, as there is nothing about Earth worthy of worship. God has promised to destroy the Earth and the rest of the universe at the end of his milennial reign; will you be crying?

Its unfortunate that it won’t be milled for lumber, but that is what this crazy country has come to.

Their just jealous...The trees in their states are puny little sucker weeds, which wouldn’t qualify as a branch on a giant California redwood.

Judging from your abundance of empathy for a dead tree, it's obvious you're a Canadian.........Think of the number of hockey sticks that could be made. LOL!
