Never Mind the Slider or Sinking Fastball, The F-Word is Carp’s Best Friend
National Review Online ^ | October 25, 2011 | Jason Epstein

From the sixth inning of last night’s game, Mike Napoli hit a Chris Carpenter offering some 400 feet to center field for a long out to end a Rangers threat. In response, Carp let the obscenities fly.

Grantland’s Jonah Keri comments:

Carpenter may have been yelling at Napoli. As he described the tail end of the digestion process, he looked Napoli’s way. On the other hand, Ken Rosenthal claimed Carpenter was merely screaming at himself, as evidenced by his tirade continuing into the dugout, with more curse words and a chucked glove. Either way, broadcast gold. Though not as good as the commercial that immediately followed on the local Fox New England affiliate. After the game, we were told Fox would have exclusive coverage of one of their reporters watching the game with Carpenter’s parents in New Hampshire. Awkwaaaard.

Hmm, the media finally gets around to revealing that Carpenter is a confrontational, foul-mouthed jerk. Earlier this summer it fit the media's template a lot better to blame the Brewers' quirky Nyjer Morgan for a bench clearing shouting match that was actually instigated by Carpenter and fomented by Albert Pujols.

Carpenter punctuated his strikeout of Morgan with an F-bomb derisively directed at Morgan. As he walked back to his dugout Morgan threw his tobacco chew sowehat in the direction of the playing field (more than 60 feet from Carpenter) and reciprocated with that same greeting to Carpenter. Pujols took such umbrage to Morgan's reaction to Carpenter's bullying that he charged towards Morgan (who was still walking away) and joined in the F-Bomb frivolities. The result of all of this confrontation: Morgan was the only player ejected.

Don't get me wrong. Carpenter is a great pitcher. Pujols is the second greatest player of the last 30 years (ahead of Griffey, but still behind Bonds). Tony LaRussa is a managerial genius. But this Cardinals team is one of the biggest bunch of foul-mouthed jerks ever assembled. They view themselves as the arbiters of baseball's unwritten rules, ettiquette and conduct while lawlessly throwing at opponents, sliding high, cursing opponents and their opponents' fans.

It's refreshing to see the media FINALLY depict these louts from St. Louis as they truly are.

You stay classy, Carp....and Go Rangers!!!!

I've read plenty of F-bombs on pitchers' lips when they make a bad pitch or get pulled.

Regardless of the sport, it's the guy who retaliates who usually gets called, isn't it?

I've been pulling for the Cards, but would be just about as happy seeing the Rangers win their first Series. Nolan Ryan is such a class act.

Language is language. What bothers me about Carpenter is the bullying aspect of his cursing. It's like he's trying to provoke a fist fight.

There's no room for that in baseball. Leave that trash-talking crap to gutter sports like pro basketball.

Anyone in the game has known that Chris Carpenter is one of the bigger POS jackholes in the game.

Read his lips he screamed at Napoli "F@@k you you piece of S*!T"

I heard the interview with Napoli afterwards and he said he heard him but didnt know he was yelling at him. He said "If thats what he said its unfortunate ...."

BTW he screamed that after Napoli nailed one all the way to the warning track...barely not a Jimmy-Jack. LOL

Seems to me that the more they cuss at Mike Napoli, the more he is single-handily destroying them.

Greinke was spot on about Carpenter.

Brewers announcer Bill Schroeder said it best earlier in the season after a beanball in between Braun’s shoulder blades:

“The Cardinals fashion themselves as the keepers of baseball etiquette....That was uncalled for. It’s just bush league, that’s what it is. Bush league. ....Once again, they’re nothing if not predictable, complain about everything, but that’s Cardinal’s baseball.” Bill Schroeder

Generally, most pro athletes are jerks and lowlifes. There are exceptions, or course, but I expect nothing less than a steady stream of F-Bombs, and after the game, lots of drinking and womanizing.

I’m only surprised when it doesn’t happen.

That said, I’m rooting for the Rangers.

He has just about as many RBI's by himself as the rest of the Rangers put together...

I agree that trash talk has no place in baseball. One of the things I love about baseball is I can take my kids to a game and have a nice family atmosphere without worrying about drunks or language.

Well, well.....here I have been enjoying the play-offs never realizing that World War 111 was going on at the same time...LOL!

As an Angels' fan I'm supporting Texas....love Nolan Ryan; Ron Washington and Michael Young (what a gentleman) and I like to see President Bush happy.

Go Rangers!!

The Red Sox are busy golfing right now; so the New Hampshire media is all over NH native Carpenter's god-like abilities...he will be the savior of the Series for St. Louis...blah, blah...

No word about his colorful linguistic skills...

In any event; the Rangers could win game six; and make all this a moot point.

In my experience most if not all pro hockey players are good citizens and very civil. There are a few goons, but they are few.

At least he is not a substance abuser like the Ranger’s manager and star player.

Carpenter was at the center of the fight that cost Jason LaRue his career.

****

Are you sure you want to go there?

Isn't the Cardinals hitting coach Mark "Steroids" McGwire?

And I do believe the Cardinals are managed by Tony "No Ossifer, I'm not drunk driving - I just needed to take a little nap at this stop light intersection" LaRussa.

And as long as we're discussing LaLusha, there is NO way he didn't know about the rampant steroid use in his clubhouses in Oakland (acknowledged) and St. Louis (alleged).

It´s really too bad these guys can´t just go with the spirit of competition and leave all this foul mouthed stuff to the gutter.
