Cat lovers, Veterinarians -- help
Me

Posted on 10/23/2011 8:46:56 PM PDT by MacMattico

We have a fenced in yard and I let my dog out. Minutes later I heard barking like crazy and my dog was acting weird. I went out with a flashlight and he had a cat on it's back and the cat had scratched my dog below both eyes and he was bleeding, so there was definitely some fighting going on. My husband took the dog in and cleaned up his wounds and I went to check on the cat. We've never seen this cat in the neighborhood before and it's a huge cat. At first it just hissed at me but after a half an hour it calmed down and let me pet it's head. I had work gloves on because I didn't want to get bit. Soon it let me check all of it's legs, stomach, back, head, and it moved a few steps and laid back down. It doesn't seem to be in any pain and had only dog drool on it-- which is the only thing my dog ever gets on our own cat-- drool from playing with it-- never has he injured it. The cat seems to be in no pain and like I said I can feel no injuries. It's responsive to movement, has moved itself but only about 10 feet walking normally, and now just seems to lay there watching me. Could it just be in shock? Going to have kittens? I picked it up and put it in a blanket where it is now laying in a box on the front porch. I called the emergency vet and it's $150 just to see the cat, husband says I shouldn't "waste" the money because it's not in pain, has no collar, and what will happen will happen. It doesn't really look mangy but a little dirty from wrestling with my dog in the landscaping. It's acting friendlier to me then my own cat! But still just laying there....

It might be just basking in the glory. It’s still not going anywhere but I brought it some food and water and it took a little, with a look of “It’s about time.” But I’ve never had a cat I’ve never seen before be so responsive and friendly yet just lay there. My cat is practically tearing the front door down trying to get out to the porch where the other one is!

I’m thinking the whole bit about cat bites being super infectious is a myth. Does anyone know the real story on this?

We had a huge Siamese cat that killed a German Shepheard. My folks said the cat went to live on a ranch.

I hope the cat doesn't have internal injuries from the dog, and declawed or not, my cat got in a bad fight, got a bad infection on its head from the neighbor cat fighting with it's back claws (declawed in front). Back cat claws inflict worse wounds. He was a vet and had the right stuff for his cat, but I put neosporin on mine and it didn't help.

Got worse, got him to the vet, got antibiotic pills, couldn't get them down him, got him to take them in his food. So he got better. I had him neutered and watch him pretty closely now because there's a couple strays I feed outside, and they have standoffs but no fighting.

I guess I wouldn't want to take a stray cat to those weekend ER's (I've done that with a couple of mine) but if it's still there tomorrow or keep it in the garage or something, take it to a cheaper vet. One of my last trips to the vet was to the cheapest one where you wait your turn. Somebody brought a little dog in that had gotten in a big dog's yard. The little one got back under the fence, and the man was holding it in a blanket. The dog got very quiet. My turn was and the vet came out and I said you'd better take that little dog.

She did, shut the door (usually didn't), got very quiet in there. Pretty soon he came out with a dead dog in a box. The vet came out crying. Internal injuries. It was awful to see. Guy leaves, pretty soon wife somes and starts yelling at the vet. Said that dog was alert before. I don't know if delay in treatment would have made a difference. I don't think there was much that could be done for the little thing.

Apart from scratches that could get infected and spread through his body your dog should be fine. Unusual for the cat to hang around though.

Sad. Just doing what critters do. I've seen a dog take out a cat with one chomp. Your dog must be small or nice not to do the same, claws or no claws.

I don’t think so, but it is a HUGE cat with tons of fur..

Lucky you, Sounds like a Maine Coon Cat. Very good breed.

If the cat is pregnant, you can feel little bumps in the tummy. (If she is far enough along)

Something doesn’t sound right here.
Even a very gentle cat would not just lay around after a fight with a dog. It could be hurt internally.

Not only serious risk of bacterial infection, is the dog absolutely current on rabies shots?

Neighbor was a chiro, not a vet. They get lots of meds now though.

I can tell you that a cat won’t attack a dog.

Not true of every cat. My parents had a big bruiser of a tom cat. Very friendly to people, but it would go nuts if it saw a dog or another tom cat it its yard - and its yard was quite a bit larger than what the county surveyor said my parent's yard was.

You would need to upload the pictures to a server like photobucket, then go from there.

If it is a huge cat, and it acts very laid back, almost dog like, it is probably a Maine Coon cat.

They are very mellow cats.

Ha! No, but when I heard the dog barking the way he was all I could think of was oh no, a skunk!

Sounds like our younger cat of the two (he’s 5.) About three years ago he just showed up on the deck and acted exactly as you describe your new friend. He’s been here ever since. He stared the dog and the older cat down for a week and now you’d think all three had grown up together.
