Anita Perry puts faith first publicly
Houston Chronicle ^ | October 22, 2011 | Melissa Ludwig

Lady in waiting she is not.

Anita Perry, wife of Republican presidential hopeful and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, has taken a flying leap into the national spotlight in recent weeks, playing a more prominent role in her husband’s campaign than anyone can recall and speaking about her Christian faith in a way that resonates with evangelicals, but surprises old friends.

In nearly three decades as a political wife in Texas, Anita Perry earned a reputation for poise and privacy, not one to seek the limelight or talk much about religion. Her public statements last week that she pushed her husband into the presidential ring because she felt he was being called by God surprised Bill Miller, an Austin lobbyist who hired Anita Perry in the 1990s.

“I always viewed Anita as someone who took politics with a gigantic grain of salt,” Miller said. “She would rather go to a baseball game for her kid than an inaugural.”

But in this race, Anita Perry has stumped alongside her husband, anchoring some campaign events by herself and making headlines along the trail.

Perhaps a spiritual calling trumped any reservations she may have about the political game.

“When we encounter trouble or pain, we need to remember that in that moment, he has promised us something more powerful,” Richard said.

Anita Perry hit that theme in her South Carolina speech, saying a man approached her husband and told him, “God is testing you because he wants you to know when you are in the White House how you got there.”

Rick: “My campaign is dying. It needs help”

Anita: “Okay. I’ll go out and talk about my faith. Will that help?”

Rick: “I hope so.”

Advisor: “Won’t this be a bit transparent? All of a sudden talking about your faith?”

Rick and Anita: “Nah, we got ‘em fooled to this point. They won’t notice we did it to bolster the campaign.”

The wife of a career politician earns her salary from donations. Nice gig.

I never thought about that until I read that statement by Anita Perry. I do believe that God is testing Gov. Perry. If he can survive the muck-raking that - not only liberals - many Republicans are dragging him through, then it will be shown that HE is the person we need in the White House at this most trying time in our history. Our next president is going to have to walk through many trials of fire.

If Gov. Perry’s campaign is dying - why do you spend so much time sniping at him? Why do you have to ping your bully-posse to this thread to make vile remarks about Anita Perry and her faith? You and your ilk just sit in your underwear trolling FreeRepublic threads about Perry so you can spew some not-funny jokes at a candidate’s wife?

You make your candidate look bad by your slimy tactics. If Perry would happen to drop out of the race (I don’t think he will) - I would not support Herman Cain because of the slimy people I see supporting him here on this forum.

To 5 - Gee, Anita Perry speaking about her faith at a function in which the motif is 'Faith and Values'.
How sneaky of her!

Meanwhile, Mrs. Romney remains quietly supportive of her husband and refused to “take a flying leap” to defend her husband against petty cruel jabs about their religion.

FreeRepublic has an infestation problem - people that defend Mitt Romney and his wife while attacking conservatives like Gov. Perry and his wife - seem to abound on these Perry threads. It’s really changing the tone of this forum.

I don’t see them as Romney supporters; most of them are disgruntled Palin supporters and illegal haters.

I guess what I mean is that if it comes down to a choice of Perry or Romney, who will they support? They have spewed such hatred of Perry - but I don't see them spew the same kind of disgust for Romney. I would conclude they would support Romney over Perry. The level of hatred toward Gov. Perry on FreeRepublic blows my mind. That can only come from a real fear that he might actually win - otherwise - they would treat him like they do Santorum, like he doesn't exist.

To spend this much time trashing a candidate? There's some real deep fear there.

I think some actually feel that Perry’s entrance into the field was part of Palin’s decision not to enter the race, and by dissing Perry with the talking points I’ve seen spread all over Democrat forums, somehow Palin will be convinced to swoop in and “save the day.” Also, if you recall the thread where a number of posters thought shooting illegals on sight was perfectly legitimate, some people think Perry is, by not hating illegals, somehow weak on illegal immigration.

That is exactly correct. It's pretty obvious when people come to these threads and mock, trash and impugn Perry and his wife. It's on every thread. It could be a thread where Perry trashes Obama and a group will be on there mocking Rick Perry.

This is the same group that has been doing this since Palin was trying to decide to run or not. I have become more encouraged when I see the same people jump these threads with the same sour, hateful remarks.

Joke? I was being serious.

The one thing I DO notice is that like the Palinistas the Perry Peons are quick to personally attack posters who say something derogatory about a third person.

Your need to denigrate someone for things they say about someone else reveals your underwear - not mine.

Thanks for showing your true colors. You need to get out of FR. This place is for conservatives, not for those who support frauds. Perry is no conservative, he is an opportunist who was once Al Gore's campaign manager. He will embrace socialism if that furthers his political career. Rick Perry was in favor of the bailout program.
