When I first got pushed into signing up for facebook 3 years ago, I thought it would be a waste of my time. after a month or two, I decided it was kinda fun. Then I started hearing bad things and started worrying about security and my use of it tapered off. Now, 3 years later, I don't look at my facebook much but when I do, I notice two things:
its almost purely women that put things on facebook and make comments on stuff.
its purely women that are sending me friend requests and I have no idea who they are.
Is facebook dying off, drying up, wasting away? Is it turning into a ladies book club or ladies cribbage club? If so, how long before the same thing happens to FR?
You have expressed many of my own sentiments about Facebook..I found it extremely boring and very “highschoolish.” It was a total waste of time for me..
The amount of chatter there that people do is amazing. Some people use it to just rattle on. However, I’ve noticed one excellent benefit to men AND women - those who run businesses - it is a GREAT way to get and keep things going.
People who have small shops, stores, use it. I have a friend who has a coffeeshop with entertainment, it has been invaluable. I know who is playing every weekend, and what the specials are, and they post pictures of a crowd I know.
It’s also been great for a small co-op I use for teaching kids. It was about to die until a new group stepped up facile with FB. My pastor uses it for talking about his sermons. So there are many applications other than gossip.
It seems to me the fx of FB is defined by your friends - if you friend a bunch of gabby women, you will get a lot of gab. I kill off gabby women...

It is genuinely depressing to see how childish adults are these days. Even the ones who dress for a real job look like they’re kids playing dress-up, as they wear jackets and ties and jab furiously at their Blackberries and iphones, updating their Facebook status.
Often on the morning subway ride, I’m the only one reading a book. Those reading a paper are usually reading the free Metro rag which is 90% gossip.

Given that almost all of my Soldiers from my old Infantry Platoon, some of whom are now Special Forces and company First Sergeants, are on Facebook, no, it’s not for “effeminate men.”
I like Facebook. I ignore the people that drive me crazy or I unfriend them. I love catching up with high school friends and family that I haven’t seen for 40 years. It is what you want it to be. I do think it’s on the decline because FB just can’t leave things alone and I get sick of all the changes!
Facebook - You have the right to remain silent. Everything you say can and will be used against you on a job interview.
Are you sure about that? You'd see me on my phone, too, except I'd be reading a book on my Kindle app.
I don’t even wanna get into the Kindle thing, but I spy on those folks, too. So, yeah, I speak the truth!
I also noticed I hardly ever see anyone using Blue-Tooth anymore.

My family posts news and photo albums on Facebook. It’s a good place for that purpose. It has also replaced an old Usenet newsgroup, allowing us to avoid trolls and racist rants.
Facebook has its uses.
Bluetooth is only really used on the road since so many states are banning driving-and-talking. I have to have a Bluetooth headset to talk on my phone when I’m driving on an Army post since all posts nationwide ban it, too.
What’s wrong with the Kindle? As long as the book is properly “translated,” it’s a fabulous resource. I did get one book for school that wasn’t translated well, and it was nearly unreadable (no page numbers, no graphics from the book, footnotes dropped in the middle of the page). Thankfully, that kind of experience is an outlier. I also invariably read much faster on a Kindle than a real book, though I’m not sure why.
What’s more annoying? Facebook, or people who whine about other people using Facebook?
You don’t want to get me going on Kindle. I have good and substantial non-petty reasons for loathing it, but you’ll be bored, trust me. I know I’m sick of talking about it, and everyone’ll use it no matter what I say. :)

I found an old girlfriend on Facebook and we’re getting together again. Also, I can post photos of me with the new girlfriend and my old girlfriends can see that. :)
My Facebook usage? Passing on economic lessons to a generation that has no clue. Using humor and pointing out the disparity of what the progressives say and what they do.
Since my Dad died, I’ve become very interested in genealogy. Facebook has allowed me to get to know family I otherwise would have never met and share my Dad’s old photos and family history. I’ve now attended two family reunions that I would not have were it not for Facebook.
Zuckerberg deserves every penny.
It's been great touching base with people who I've normally hear from far less via normal methods. There's a sense of "neighborhood" and community in the forum.
So Yes, I do take time to respond and chat with people, but I feel a true sense of connection to them that wouldn't normally be available unless I was spending hours on the phone or sending out emails.
From that perspective, it's a truly powerful tool, not just for entertainment.
Anyway, to each their own, you'd each have my respect if you used it or not. I think the constraint placed on all of us in using this tool is to understand that regardless of privacy settings, just like FR, we are in a "public forum", and to behave accordingly.
Oh, and I've had to drop commie "former" friends after ripping them new ones for commie political posts on FB. I've explained, harshly, I don't need this crap tossed in my face and I see exactly how much you respect your friends, blah, blah, blah... What can you do? Liberals are all idiots. Some can be salvaged but not all the time.

I used to not care for Facebook. However, I now have about 100 truly Catholic and Protestant “friends” on Facebook from all over the world. We share our faith and it is reassuring to see how faith keeps us all strong. I don’t use Facbook to talk about meaningless or trivial things and neither do most of my Facebook friends. We use it to evangelize and to educate and to learn. I think it is great, now.
