Best Non-Coupon Food Bargain Out There
Self | October 21, 2011 | PJ-Comix

Okay, you want a GREAT food deal but you don't like fiddling around with coupons. Good news! I have been taking advantage of an incredible bargain at Walmart for several weeks. Here it is:

A 2 lb bag of frozen WILD flounder for just $5.27. That is only $2.63 per pound. I stress WILD because wild caught fish are much better than farm raised fish which just don't have the same rich taste.

I am now eating this WILD flounder at least 3 times per week, including last night. What is great about it is not only the flavor but also the texture. It is best cooked with onions and Adobe seasoning.

Compare this price to that of the cost of flounder in Publix which is $7.99 for a 20 oz bag. I've eaten tilapia but, believe me, WILD flounder is much better.

I think Winco foods here in the West has suspect meat...sure, when they had their grand opening, I got some nice rib roasts very cheap but that must have been for show because since then the meat/fish has been not very good....

Unless eating at a nice restaurant (rare lately) my fish comes from the Chesapeake Bay and is caught by me. Rockfish, smoked bluefish, steamed crabs, oysters, speckled sea trout, occasional flounder. I’ve caught red drum only once.

Sounds delicious. Bluefish, red drum, sea trout, and flounder rarely appear on in seafood markets or restaurants on the West Coast

When we can get out on the San Pedro Channel, we catch a lot of sand bass, calico bass, and mackerel. Often we catch a lot of croaker, also known as tom cod or Pasadena trout, which I usually throw back, even though they're edible. We also sometimes get barracuda and bonito, but these species don't seem to be as plentiful as they were in the past.

My favorite sea creature to go after is giant squid. They don't appear very often, but when you hook them, they fight back at you, squirting you first with seawater and then with ink.

I buy most of my seafood at Trader Joe’s.

COSTCO Marinated frozen Salmon is really good.

I don’t know about bargains but we get local eggs that are all double-yoked. There’s no comparison to any other egg I’ve ever tasted.

Cod. Walmart. Same package. $5 per bag. They have a lot of name brand fish. Don’t buy their beef. Too lean. I think it’s all SELECT, the lowest cut on the scale. Also, Tilapia. Freshwater fish. Tastes like mud. You need to soak the fish in salty water before you cook it. It mitigates the muddy taste. Salmon. Farm or Wild. Go to Kam Man Supermarket in Quincy. They have wild Salmon fillets for $2.50 a poound. Santa Maria !

FWIW, Walmart sometimes has DUCK ! My wife makes their duck into a culinary delight. I used to buy the duck in Boston’s Chinatown. It would be hanging in the window and we would buy about one half, cut into pieces with a little container of duck sauce. I thought it was delicious. Then, I bought a duck from WallyWorld. My wife cooked it. Blew the doors off the Chinatown Duck.
Whenever I see duck at Walmart, I stock up.

going to the freezer to thaw one out....

“In my book, the best tasting fish is black crappie”

One of the best anyway. My sister and I used to just gut and scale them and cut off the heads and panfry them in flour and cornmeal. Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm! Hush puppies and collards on the side.

The NYTimes once bought samples of fish sold as ‘wild’ and sent them to a DNA lab. About 2/3 were from farms.

Walmart has a loooooong memory - wouldn't want to be one who scammed them with 'farm raised' when they're selling as wild... That would be a big 'no no'..

I love duck! Aldi’s sometimes gets Maple Leaf Farms ducks for about $7.99 each. Most restaurants serve this same brand of duck. The best duck I’ve ever eaten though was Bell&Evans, that I got at Whole Foods.

Adobe makes seasoning now? Does it cost $500+ like their software?
