I look at the 1988 electoral college map and it shocks me everytime I see it. George Bush won California, Maryland, Illinois and even Vermont.
This was just 23 years ago. Thats not really that long. What has chanced so much since ? I know some of it is demographic, but I think demographics can sometimes be over rated. Heck it was just 15 years ago Bill Clinton was running to the right of Bob Dole in many ways.
What has changed the most in the last 10-20 years or so in culture and politics ?
"Hell, I never vote for anybody, I always vote against."
~W.C. Fields
The brain washed from our education system have come of age...thats the difference...
Once people found out the Dukakis was the ACLU that was enough to persuade many to vote for Bush. Even John Stewart recently said he voted for Bush in ‘88. Also we were coming off of a beloved two term President in Ronald Reagan and Bush got his third term.
Yours is an excellent question. For us that have lived a very long time, it an even greater question.
Just to put it in perspective for you, look up the population of the USA at the time that the US Federal Government, for the first time, had a budget that exceeded 100,000,000,000.00 US$. Also note who was the US President at that time. Ponder, for a moment, then and now - - - .
You are living at a time when the US Politicians have caused a financial death spiral for America. America and the US Federal Government are now separate economic, and value systems.
The looney in the White House is afraid to meet with Congress so he hops on his Corporate Jet, Million dollar Canadian bus, or Marine One helicopter, and gives pretty, pep-talk speeches to himself. (Where ARE my marchin’ shoes, anyway!?)
The larger picture is that the US Federal Government is attempting to replace a free market economic system with the European Feudal (=Socialism) System that always fails when the political elite spend all the money.
Meanwhile, politicians come and go with no plan to reduce the negative impact on America by Public Enemy Number One: The US Federal Government.
The checks and balances used back in the day no longer work. Perhaps you, our hope for the future, can someday tell us why?
Them:
Look at that map, circa 1988. What are the standouts?
First, obviously Cali, which was a solid Union state heavily invested in the defense industry. Defense industry dried up in the early 90s and the Hispanic population exploded.
Next Michigan and PA.......both of whom could seriously go GOP in 2012. Ohio? It’s the swing state it always has been. West Virginy has swung solid Red since then. Iowa and Wisconsin are now swing states.
Or rather, I should have said they have changed culture and politics the most in the last 20 years or so.
You know the point when a long slide finally goes over the edge of the cliff?
The Clintons are that point.
Texas isn't destined to be a red state much longer. In 1980 there were three Anglos for every Hispanic. By 2020 Hispanics will outnumber Anglos and by 2040 70% of children under 5 in Texas will be Hispanic. 50% of k-12 Texas students already are Hispanic.
Texas is lost by having created a welcoming atmosphere for illegals. Arrogant Texans have not figured it out yet.
47% do not pay any federal taxes and see government as a source of income. The bigger it is the better for them.
The major changes:
77 million Baby Boomers are now hitting retirement age, their 401k’s are devastated and their giant McMansions are underwater.
The Internet is ubiquitous. Smart phones. Google delivers more news than all TV stations, radios, newspapers, and magazines combined now.
Religion. Major denominations lost the cultural war...missions in Africa while gay marriage and legalizing marijauna swept our home front.
The left controls the MSM, that’s what happened.
They control the message and are now attacking Cain much in the way they have Palin the last 3 years.
Thanks for replying to one of my vanities without ripping me to shreds for a change.
I think the Clintons were an important factor. There is no way that a candidate in the mold of a Mondale or a Dukakis would have gained the electoral momentum that Clinton had. The irony is that it took a southern Democratic to win over the Northeast, Illinois and California. State that have been Democratic since.
Illinois is the big stand out for me. It used to go with the winner all of the time. It was a swing state much like Florida is now.
Ohio is still right down the middle thank God.
Ohio, Illinois and California were the key swing states between 1916 and 1988.
Incramentalism by the commies in this country. I hope I spelled that right.. But Nakita did say we would fall with out a shot being fired. Or something to that effect..
Maybe the Duggans can bring their kids to Texas. Just think twenty kids marrying and having twenty kids etc. etc.
I’m surprised that nobody has brought up Al Gore. I lay the bulk of our current divisiveness squarely at his feet. For 36 days in 2000, he threw the nation into electoral limboraining down an army of lawyers to pull every dirty trick they could muster to steal Florida. The market tanked from the uncertainty. It was a time when the U.S. media shed any semblance of objectivity.
Even after the Supreme Court decision on December 12 forced a Gore concession, Al Jr. and his leftist media minions did their best to undermine not just the Bush presidency, but its very legitimacy for 8 long years. To this day, millions of Americans refuse to accept any legislation signed by George W. Bush as valid. The steady media drumbeat of our “selected” President set up a permanent rift that All Gore’s lack of nobility fed to infinity.
Not to mention the snake oil of Global Warming he has championed to line his pathetic pockets.
Yes, there was a time Americans could agree to disagree. But now, it’s a level of political discord that chokes the Unity America was built onthanks largely to Al Gore!
The Democrats played the southern strategy twice, first with Carter, then with Clinton, but the south is on to them now.
The WWII veterans that elected Ronald Reagan died off and were replaced with illegal aliens.
If there is one thing that the communists understand it is the power of propaganda. How did Adam and Eve fall? They were not forced to eat of the fruit, they were convinced by serpentine words. The communists, being formed by intellectuals are very clever especially in the area of human psychology and they use it to conquer their enemies.
Mexican Invasion. And if you are White their children will step ahead of yours in education and employment, too. It really is that simpler in Cali and maybe Illinois too.
