While I do think that the dog should have either been in a room behind a closed door (or on a leash held by one of the older children) so that the three year old could not let him outside, shooting the dog was overkill.
What happened to "Sir, take your dog indoors or leash him?"
Overreactions and unnecessary escalations like this are responsible for a more negative perception of LEOs.

The word is out. Dogs nowadays just don’t respect the uniform.

It’s officers like this foul git giving other decent police officers a dreadfully foul reputation with the general public.

I don’t see any reason the animal control officer was not given the chance to subdue the dog first. I’d like to hear from the control officer - it never feels right to just read one side of the dispute.

definitely sounds like something a needledick-steroid junkie with gun would do.

The 12yo golden getting shot, in another story on here in the last day, was far more sympathetic IMO.
First, what is anyone doing with even a Rottweiler mix, let alone a family with an ill-supervised 3yo having one? Those are scary, scary dogs.
Second, what was the dog doing in a situation to nip a 10yo? And if the police were called because of that, it is understandable that they were on guard.
Third, it’s pretty basic that if the dog is to be in the house, while dealing with the police outdoors after such an incident, the dog should be indoors.

WTF is it with all these cops killing dogs.
Does a cop get 72 doughnuts in cop heaven or what?

What, I wonder, was the “Animal Control Officer” doing while the LEO’s were pulling their firearms? Aren't they equipped & trained for these types of seizures?

Just looked at facebook photos of Bucky. What a cute dog. I can't imagine shooting this dog. “Trigger happy” comes to mind. This officer should be FIRED! He is a danger to society. He can't restrain himself from firing his weapon. What will he shoot next a teenager? Grandma?
What is this guy's name? Let's hound (on purpose) him into unemployment.

The dog was justifiably shot for a very serious reason- opportunity. Shooting dogs must be part of police academy training to take advantage of real life target practice which is judged more efficacious than static targets on a range and causes less of a hassle than shooting random citizens. The practice is so widespread as to seem ubiquitous and that leads me to the thought that it must be part of the training.
If the article is correct then the dog was shot because it was making noise, nothing more.
